The Premier League is set to lose out on an extra Champions League place following this week’s results across Europe.
Both Manchester City and Arsenal were eliminated from the Champions League, while Liverpool and West Ham were dumped out of the Europa League, meaning Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League results are the only way to boost England’s UEFA coefficient score.
Italy are now guaranteed to finish in the top two after Thursday night’s results with both Atalanta and Roma reaching the Europa League semi final, while Fiorentina have made the semi final of the Europa Conference League.
Germany are in the strongest position to take second place after Italy with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both in the Champions League semi final, while newly crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are in the final four of the Europa League.
For the 2024/25 Champions League campaign, there will be an expanded tournament with 36 teams. That is four more than currently, with two of those places to be filled ‘European Performance Spots’.
Places will be assigned to the associations with the best collective performance – classed as their coefficient – by their clubs in Europe this season. For the Premier League, who already get four Champions League spots, that would mean fifth place also qualifies.
Wins are rewarded with two coefficient points and a draw is worth one point, with nothing for a defeat, while there are also bonus points for participation at various stages of the competitions. The tally is then divided by the number of clubs an association has competing in Europe to create a coefficient average.

Italy are guaranteed an extra Champions League place for next season as they are mathematically certain to finish in the top two. Roma and Atalanta are in the Europa League semi finals, while Fiorentina are in the final four of the Europa Conference League.

The two clubs will also avoid each other in the final four which means more potential points for the Germany’s coefficient score. Bayer Leverkusen are also looking to complete a treble by winning the Europa League this season.

England’s hopes of securing a top-two finish in UEFA’s coefficient table took a major blow with Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and West Ham all crashing out of Europe this week.
Aston Villa are now England’s only hopes of securing more points in the UEFA coefficient table.

France’s slim chance of securing a top-two finish in the UEFA coefficient table rests on Paris Saint-Germain’s progress in the Champions League and whether Marseille’s late run in the Europa League.

Spain are now out of the running after both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League this week. Only Real Madrid can boost their coefficient score but even if they win the Champions League it won’t be enough to finish in the top two.
