Jack Wilshere has now spoken about the angriest he’s ever seen Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

The Frenchman almost always came across as a calm, measured figure during his 22 years at Arsenal, rarely losing his temper with players or those in the media.

However, there was one incident back in 2011 which apparently left the 74-year-old seething.

So, what did Jack Wilshere say about Arsene Wenger? Let’s take a look…

Well, the 32-year-old was only 19 at the time of this incident.

Wenger famously coined the phrase “I did not see it” when asked about controversial refereeing decisions in his interviews, but the man from Strasbourg certainly saw this one.

Wilshere has now revealed that Massimo Busacca’s bizarre decision to send Robin van Persie off against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League ignited the most livid version of Wenger he’s ever seen.

The Dutchman was famously dismissed in the second leg of Arsenal’s Round of 16 clash against Barcelona for kicking the ball away, albeit just seconds after Busacca had blown the whistle for offside.

It was far from an act of dissent from Van Persie – who shot just a second after the whistle went inside a raucously loud Camp Nou – and Arsenal went on to lose the tie.

Wilshere – who played in the game – told Arsenal’s official website: “I was thinking, what have I just seen?

“I remember being angry, and Arsene was so angry. I knew why he’d been sent off, but it didn’t make sense. The ref was terrible, and I’d never seen Arsene as angry as he was after that game. He was usually so calm, and kept us calm, but he knew this was out of his control. That’s when I knew it must have been a bad refereeing performance for him to react like that, with all that he’d seen in the game.”

Even to this day, Busacca’s decision to send Van Persie off is mentioned as one of the worst refereeing mistakes in football history.

Arsenal robbed

Arsenal were well in this Round of 16 tie, with the scoreline reading 3-2 before Van Persie’s dismissal.

It ended Arsenal’s chances of progressing, and Mikel Arteta will be desperately hoping not to see a similar incident go against his team vs Bayern Munich tonight.

Fortunately, the introduction of VAR since that day in 2011 should ensure another horrific mistake like that never occurs again.
