Olympique de Marseille could be on the verge of losing a player for the upcoming season. While the Olympians are still in the running for European spots, Pape Gueye seems to have his sights set on Spain.
Pape Gueye is reportedly close to joining his former coach, Marcelino, at Villarreal. According to Spanish newspaper As, the Marseille player has already reached an agreement with his future club. The Senegalese midfielder will be a free agent in June.
The Spanish coach was impressed by the player during his brief stint earlier in the season and has prioritized his signing for the transfer window. Gueye has previous experience in La Liga with Sevilla during the 2016/2017 season.
In his fourth year at OM, Pape Gueye has endured a challenging season. Suspended at the start of the season due to a transfer dispute between Watford and Marseille, he only started featuring in matches from December onwards.
However, the Senegalese midfielder declined to extend his contract. As a result, President Pablo Longoria decided to sideline him. Nevertheless, he managed to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup when Jean-Louis Gasset took charge of the club. In total, Gueye has played only eleven matches this season.
