John Terry has spoken out on the incident with Anton Ferdinand in 2011 which saw the former England captain accused of using racist language. Terry, 43, had never previously spoken publicly about the accusations that resulted in a criminal trial at Westminster Magistrates Court, but opened up on the saga during an appearance on Simon Jordan’s Up Front podcast that was aired this week.

Terry was found not guilty of a racially-aggravated public order offence after being accused of calling Ferdinand a "f***ing black c***" during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at QPR, with the prosecution unable to prove he had used the words insultingly. However, in a separate hearing, an FA independent regulatory commission found him guilty and issued a four-match ban and £220,000 fine, with Terry responding by quitting international football.

Asked by Jordan if he would deny the perception that he was a racist, Terry reacted bullishly. “Simon 100 per cent, I can’t believe you even asked me to be honest,” he said, with the host then arguing he needed to ask the question given the significance of the saga on Terry’s career.

And Terry, now back at Stamford Bridge as an academy coach, was scathing about the FA process, responding to Jordan’s direct question about whether he felt he received a fair trial: "No I didn’t.” He also argued that the verdict delivered in Westminster was the only one he considered relevant.

"I could have overcome it, given a fair trial again, and given the evidence which we had in the court of law, which was refused by the FA,” he said. "I go into Wembley on the first day and my lawyers and myself demand evidence to be in, that was in the court of law, and it was refused - literally and blatantly. So we then have an hour's meeting outside of that.

"Board members are refused entry to come and give evidence backing me and telling their side of the story. So right from the outset it wasn't going to be a fair trial, clearly. They'd made up their mind right from the outset, in my mind.”

In the 2020 documentary Anton Ferdinand: Football, Racism and Me, the 39-year-old spoke candidly about the effect that the trial had on his own life, claiming he was made to feel like the instigator by authorities and not a victim of racism. The BBC claimed to have contacted Terry and his representatives to participate in the programme, but received no response.

Terry countered previous claims he had made no attempt to contact Ferdinand, having previously struck up a friendship with his brother Rio from their time together at international level. He said he reached out to the player in the immediate aftermath of the match at Loftus Road, but received no response.

"We could have done something that was probably more powerful than what came about in the end, and that's probably my disappointment” he said. “Because it's in the game (racism), in the stadiums and all of that - that we need to get out, for sure. We could have done something really powerful as a group of players - not only us but everybody else, I think, at the time.”

Terry’s words have provoked a divisive reaction, with many football supporters questioning why he’s waited 13 years before sharing his side of the story. Ferdinand himself, who still has a preview of his BBC documentary pinned to his X account on social media, is yet to comment on Terry’s claims.
