The future of Callum Wilson at Newcastle United this summer could come under the microscope as his injuries stop the England man from being able to push on. It might be time for him to exit Newcastle.

The 32-year-old is about to enter the last 12 months of his contract at Newcastle, having only managed 22 outings this season and currently sidelined with a chest injury. Still, he has managed to score eight.

There is clearly a top, top marksman in Wilson – but the injuries are preventing him from playing. He has missed 23 games this season, meaning Wilson has unavailable more times than he has been available.

While Newcastle would love have to Wilson – or at least, a fit version of the former Bournemouth man – as back-up to Alexander Isak, it might serve all parties for Wilson to leave at the end of the season.

Callum Wilson expected to leave Newcastle United this summer

That is according to Don Hutchison, who spoke to ESPN FC about Wilson’s future over the weekend – and picked a possible replacement. He identified Bournemouth’s Dom Solanke as a man that could come in.

England international Solanke, meanwhile, is enjoying his best season yet and while Wilson is arguably past his peak now – Solanke still has plenty of time before he reaches it – at just 26. He has 19 goals.

A target for Tottenham this summer, Bournemouth’s £24m signing has been described as “unbelievable” by Scott Parker. Newcastle were linked in January, touted to have made an approach in the last window.

What Don Hutchison said about Newcastle signing Solanke

Hutchison said: “Solanke would be a good replacement for Callum Wilson, in truth. I think it is time Wilson moved on – he’s a brilliant player when fit but can’t seem to stay fit. Solanke to Newcastle.”

Solanke would be a senational signing. But, the issue Newcastle would have in tempting him is whether he would be happy as the club’s back-up striker to Isak. That is, if they can keep Isak at St. James’ Park.

Eddie Howe knows Solanke well having signed him at The Vitality and that could prove helpful in striking a deal. It is unclear if Solanke is keen on a move away from Bournemouth, ahead of the summer window.
