“I’m Told…” – Sky Reporter Confirms That United Have Made Transfer Decision On £80M Defender

Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite is “not currently a top target” for Manchester United, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The defender has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, with some reports claiming that the Red Devils could pay as much as £80m for him but, taking to X, Plettenberg clarified the situation:

“The 21 y/o from Everton is on the list of Manchester United and being scouted. Among many other candidates, as a new center-back is definitely supposed to come. However, I’m told that he’s not currently a top target. Especially not for the rumored price of around €93m (£80m).”

Whether United would be more open to doing business if Everton lower their demands for Branthwaite, it remains to be seen.

Other Premier League clubs have also been linked with the player

Branthwaite’s impressive performances for Everton this season have prompted transfer speculation and United are not the only team to be mentioned as potential suitors.

Rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest, and that may have led to his club slapping a sky-high asking price on the centre-half.

United have looked at cheaper alternatives

As Plettenberg mentions, United are seriously considering their options as they look to reinforce their backline. With Raphael Varane poised to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires, a replacement will be needed.

In addition to Branthwaite, the likes of Wolves’ Max Kilman, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, Benfica’s Antonio Silva and Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo have reportedly been scouted.

Most of those targets will cost a lot less than Branthwaite. Adarabioyo, for example, could even be available on a free transfer if he doesn’t sign a contract extension soon.

A lot will depend on how much money United are willing to devote to strengthening the middle of defence this summer.
