Ryan Giggs claims Sir Alex Ferguson deeply ‘respected’ one team and one manager in his entire Man Utd career

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson had the ultimate respect for one team and one manager in his legendary career.

Ryan Giggs spent the majority of his prolific career under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford after breaking into the first team as one of the ‘Class of ‘92’ members.

The 50-year-old former Wales winger had an illustrious playing spell at Old Trafford and lifted a whopping 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United.

Giggs, who is one of United’s best players of all time, also captured two Champions League titles, four FA Cups and Three League Cups under United legend Ferguson.

Ferguson made a long-lasting mark at the Red Devils and the iconic former United boss bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013 for the final time as a manager.

The 82-year-old Scotsman ushered in a period of dominance for United in English football, with the club capturing 13 Premier League titles under Ferguson’s rule.

Ferguson is widely revered for his exploits in the managerial dugout – both in Scotland and England – and is one of the best managers in the history of the sport.

The legendary Scot crossed paths with his fair share of tough teams and formidable managers, but Ferguson had a deep respect for one club and one coach in his career.

Giggs on Ferguson and Man Utd

Speaking to the Coaches’ Voice, Ryan Giggs opened up about his time under Sir Alex Ferguson and the former Manchester United manager’s legacy in the sport.

Ferguson had his fair share of rivalries in his legendary United career, including against the likes of Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger.

Arsene Wenger had a famous rivalry with Ferguson in the Premier League after he took charge of Arsenal, with the Frenchman challenging United’s dominance.

The Gunners lifted three Premier League titles under Wenger, including leading Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ side to the trophy in the 2003-04 season.

Ferguson had heated battles with the 74-year-old Frenchman and the United vs Arsenal rivalry under the pair produced iconic moments in the Premier League era.

According to Giggs, United legend Ferguson was always trying to edge out his rivals and had respect for both Arsenal and Wenger for pushing him to the limit.

“If he could get anything up on the opposition’s manager and the team, then he would do, whether it be killing them with kindness or being aggressive towards the manager,” he said.

“‘He said this, he said that about you, what are you going to do about that?’

“He was constantly finding ways to get that edge, because he respected Arsenal, he respected [Arsene] Wenger, and he knew that it was the fine details that could perhaps get us that result.”

Man Utd legend Ferguson talks Wenger rivalry

United icon Ferguson and Arsenal legend Wenger became the first managers to take their place – and rightfully so – in the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2023.

Ferguson admitted at the time that Wenger was a “very worthy inductee” and the former Gunners boss “transformed” the London club “fantastically.”

The former Aberdeen and United manager added that Arsenal were a “tough” team under Wenger and their rivalry in the dugout “motivated” them even further.

“I feel Arsene is a very worthy inductee as he transformed Arsenal Football Club fantastically,” he said in 2023.

“They became a tough team to compete with and we both wanted to win, which motivated us further.

“Through the years since retirement, we’d go for dinner together in a little restaurant he knows well in Switzerland.

“He is a really interesting man and I enjoy his company, but it is still my job to pick the wine!”
