La Liga: Real Madrid grind out narrow win against Real Sociedad

Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to a whopping 14 points after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in San Sebastian. Despite being outplayed for much of the game, a single goal by Arda Güler was enough to secure the win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

With their focus firmly set on the upcoming Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, Ancelotti heavily rotated his squad. This gamble almost backfired early on as Sociedad piled on the pressure. Takefusa Kubo nearly surprised Kepa Arrizabalaga with a shot at the near post, and a penalty shout from Mikel Oyarzabal sent shivers down Los Blancos’ spines.

Just when Sociedad looked like they might break through, Madrid took the lead against the run of play with their first real chance. Nacho Fernández whipped in a delightful cross from the right, and Arda Güler expertly guided the ball past Álex Remiro to notch his second goal of the season.

Sociedad’s frustration grew further after halftime. A goal by Kubo was chalked off by VAR after a foul in the build-up, and later, Mikel Merino’s deflected shot found Oyarzabal, who slotted it past the keeper, only to be flagged offside.

The Basque side continued to throw punches throughout the second half, with Oyarzabal, Kubo, and Sheraldo Becker all going close. However, Real Madrid held firm, with Kepa Arrizabalaga making a crucial save from Beñat Turrientes in the second half.

This victory marks a league double over Sociedad for Real Madrid and extends their unbeaten run in La Liga to a staggering 27 games. They are now one step closer to securing their 36th league title.

Man of the Match: Nacho (Real Madrid).
