In less than 24 hours, though, hopes faded and died like most of West Ham’s dreams.

Confirmation from Portugal on his return that Amorim would not indeed be taking over at West Ham.

There has been claim and counter claim since. One being that Amorim used the Hammers talks to pressure Liverpool into offering him the job.

The prospect of Amorim joining West Ham – who are unlikely to be in Europe next season – did not go down too well in Portugal.

The Hammers were deemed inferior to his current club from a sporting perspective.

West Ham might be massive but they’re not big enough

And there was a feeling Amorim should only be leaving Sporting for an elite club.

Not only that but some where unhappy amid confusion over whether Amorim had permission to meet with West Ham.

Some analysts however felt it West Ham could be a sensible first step into a major European league.

With Liverpool turning their attentions to Arne Slot, there has been some renewed hope West Ham might still be able to lure Amorim.

But it looks like the page can be turned on this particular chapter.

Because Amorim is now set to hold a press conference about his talks with West Ham claim the Portuguese press.

‘Amorim set to apologise and admit mistake’

CNN Portugal journalist Henrique Mateus led a newscast on Amorim alongside Bruno Andrade and Sofia Oliveira on Wednesday.

And it is claimed as fact that Amorim will hold a press conference on Saturday addressing his talks with West Ham.

In it, he is expected to apologise to Sporting and admit he made a mistake, surely tolling the death knell for any remaining hopes West Ham might have that he’ll be their next boss.

“The plan for Saturday, in fact, is to offer context, which he (Amorim) will outline at the conference, which promises to be basically in relation to this trip he took to London,” Andrade said, as transcribed by Hammers News.

“He will admit a mistake without making it very clear whether or not Sporting authorised this trip to London.

“But he will admit that the team was not the best and will confirm that the trip had to do with what is very unlikely to be his future. That the trip to West Ham taught him not to create a bigger controversy and call into question his future.

‘He will confirm’

“But he will confirm that he was on English soil to deal with his future – in other words he admits to making a mistake. Especially because on the 11th he said that there would be no interview in the background (with Liverpool as he was focused on Sporting’s title pursuit).

“He travelled to be interviewed (by West Ham) and here very quickly this trip goes wrong for two reasons firstly because you remember the statement in which he says that there will be no interview and at the end there is an interview that goes very badly in the eyes of the associates of Sporting who believed his words but he ended up fulfilling another thing, which is natural, we can discuss later.

“But in the end, it didn’t justify what I had said more recently and this was also a move to put pressure on Liverpool.”

Why is Amorim so coveted by West Ham and Liverpool? Take a look at the video below.
