With the summer transfer window approaching, here are three players that the incoming Sunderland manager needs to loan.

All eyes are now on the transfer window at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland’s 2023/24 campaign has been far from memorable as they prepare for their final game of the season.

The club’s ambitions for promotion were quickly swept away in 2024 after a terrible run of form.

As a result, many changes are expected this summer with a new permanent manager set to take over Mike Dodds.

Therefore, Sunderland’s first team will also likely be moved around to suit the new boss’ needs.

Ahead of the summer, this article has highlighted three players who should be sent out on loan for the upcoming campaign.

Luis Semedo

Things just haven’t worked out for Luis Semedo since his transfer to the Stadium of Light last summer.

The attacker is yet to score his first goal for the Black Cats despite making over a combined 20 appearances for three different Sunderland managers.

As a result, it is evident that the youngster is struggling to adapt to the division. WhoScored rated Semedo’s performances as the second-worst in the Championship this season based on their average ratings.

However, Semedo is still only 20 years old and could easily reach the potential that Sunderland and Tony Mowbray originally saw in him.

A loan move away could help regain some of his confidence for the youngster. Semedo is in desperate need of a goal and a good spell away could be exactly what he needs.

Nazariy Rusyn

Another player whose summer move has not worked out. Nazariy Rusyn came to Sunderland in the summer with a lot of promise. The striker was a clinical finisher in the Ukrainian league and hit double figures in the last campaign.

However, things have gone terribly wrong since his move to England. Rusyn has only netted twice for the Black Cats in 22 games to date.

Goals have been a major problem for Sunderland this season and the Ukrainian’s woes have not helped the situation.

A loan move this summer could help breathe confidence back into the forward.

The adaptation to English football has clearly been an issue. A six-month loan to a top League One side could help return the striker to form before returning to the Black Cats for the final end-of-season push.

Elliot Embleton

Elliot Embleton’s 2023/24 season has been a tragedy. After picking up an injury the season prior, the midfielder looked to regain his form on loan to Derby County.

However, after just two games at the East Midlands side, it was revealed that the 25-year-old had torn his quadriceps in training.

Since then, Embleton has been on the road to recovery with his loan spell at the Rams being terminated in January.

The midfielder is likely to return to fitness next season. Therefore, a loan spell away after nearly two years without consistent football could help him get back to his best.
