Thierry Henry issues harsh Arsenal Champions League truth as Mikel Arteta task made clear

Latest Arsenal news with club legend Thierry Henry delivering his assessment of the Champions League knockout stage defeat to Bayern Munich

Thierry Henry has revealed Mikel Arteta's next task if Arsenal want to avoid Champions League disappointment in the future. The Gunners were beaten over two quarter-final legs by Bayern Munich with a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday evening following on from a 2-2 draw the previous week at Emirates Stadium.

Up until last Saturday, Arsenal had endured a superb season and were on course to enter the final few weeks of the season competing for two trophies. However, as they did in April of the last campaign, the cracks have begun to show in the biggest moments with fatigue setting in and in the space of four days the Gunners have seen their trophy hopes take a drastic hit.

Over the weekend, Aston Villa beat Arsenal to leave them no longer in control of their title fate and now Bayern have knocked them out of the Champions League. Following the most recent defeat, Arsenal legend Henry offered his thoughts on the game with a clear message sent to Arteta and sporting director Edu.

"The two goals at home were soft to concede and we all know if you do those mistakes in the Champions League you are going to pay the price," the Arsenal legend admitted on CBS Sports. "Today wasn't good enough, I would say but I don't think there was much into the game. Both teams, and I have said this so many times, didn't want to lose the game.

"They were not really going for it and there was a moment of I would say bad defending for me, not only for Gabriel Martinelli as it did work at the beginning and I would put Tomiyasu in that, not covering his centre-back and not closing that line, but that's a different ball game.

"You asked me so many times as an Arsenal fan do you think we can win the Champions League? I said yes because that is hope and wishing. Do I think after that we could if I take my Arsenal hat away from my head, and I said it so many times when we play three games a week we struggle.

"And so maybe it can be a good thing now we have focus in the Premier League, but like I said are we equipped to play every three days? That is my question. I am just saying that throughout the last two years, we always went on a good run when we did not have midweek games."

While Henry makes a good point, title rivals Manchester City will also face a similar schedule with Liverpool likely to follow in being eliminated from Europe considering they are three goals behind to Atalanta from their first leg. As they did last season, Arsenal may well have just run out of steam and the only way to really fix that is add more quality options to Arteta's squad so he can rotate more frequently without worrying about any drop-off in ability.
