Osasuna striker Ante Budimir has made his claim for the worst penalty of all time after fluffing a disastrous late attempt against Valencia on Monday evening.

The Croatian had the chance to rescue a draw for the LaLiga hosts in the dying embers of stoppage time after initially winning a controversial penalty.

Budimir was presented with the chance to snatch a point for Osasuna after being kicked in the back of the leg by Valencia defender Hugo Guillamon.

He stepped up confidently as the El Sadar stadium held its breath in anticipation, but was left wishing the ground would swallow him up moments later as the ball nestled in the hands of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Budimir looked split between whether to opt for power or try to chip the ball down the middle of the goal and instead ended up almost tripping when he went to take his shot.

Having clipped the ground as he was about to strike the ball, Budimir's effort failed to even make it all the way to the goal as a grateful Mamardashvili got up off the ground to snatch the ball despite having already dived.

Budimir and his Osasuna team-mates couldn't believe what had happened while a commentator began describing the comical moment to stunned viewers.

'He's missed it, and he hasn't just missed it, it's the worst penalty you've seen so far this season and maybe ever,' the Premier Sports commentator said.

'Poor old Ante Budimir, what a moment and what a terrible spot-kick that was.

'Valencia fans will feel justice has been done, Osasuna fans applauding the player but that is his worst moment of the campaign.'

The torrid effort prompted further shocked reactions in the home team dugout as staff sat with their heads in their hands unable to believe what had just happened.

Comments flooded social media in reaction to the horror penalty as the Osasuna star - who has scored 17 goals in all competitions - painfully waited for the referee to blow his full-time whistle.

'Looked down at the pitch like it was somehow to blame' said one comment on X.

Another similar post added: 'Oh no. What’s he even trying?' while a third stated: 'he deserved that for diving for the penalty.'
