Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed that surgery on a season-ending groin injury was successful.

The 23-year-old was ruled out for the Blues' final six games of the season after undergoing surgery on a muscle issue the midfielder claims has troubled him since October.

Fernandez, who was the most expensive player in Premier League history when he moved to Stamford Bridge from Benfica in January 2023, admitted that the decision to end his campaign early and go under the knife was taken after the pain became "more and more intense" until the point where he couldn't "stand it anymore".

Taking to Instagram on Friday, though, Fernandez revealed the surgery had been a success and that his return to action will see him come back "stronger than ever".

"My operation was successful, everything went well thank God. I needed to get this surgery since l have been dragging the pain for about six months," wrote Fernandez.

“It was something I could avoid while constantly treating myself with injections and medications. But a few weeks ago the pain started to get more and more intense, without any of this taking effect, and it was worse as I trained and played annoyingly, but I didn't want to stop being in the games I had…

“Whenever I got to play with Chelsea jersey, like the national team, I always try to do my best despite all this but I can't stand it anymore…

"Thank you for the messages, encouragement and your token of love always. Shout out to everyone, I promise you l'm coming back stronger than ever.”

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Mauricio Pochettino defended Chelsea's decision to allow Fernandez to undergo surgery and miss the final games of the season.

“Enzo Fernandez feels pain, he was not playing in normal conditions and so the most important thing is to fix the problem," said Pochettino. “If he can’t perform, it’s not good for us, for the club and for everyone”.
