Tottenham Hotspur may make some midfield changes this summer as Ange Postecoglou heads towards a third transfer window at the club.

Saturday’s defeat at Newcastle United was understandably disappointing but Postecoglou’s first season in charge has been mostly positive.

Tottenham fans have attacking football to watch again and the trajectory of the club looks much more positive than it did a year ago.

Postecoglou has only had two transfer windows at Tottenham and whilst recruitment has been solid, he still needs to really mould this Spurs squad.

Midfield changes seem likely with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso likely to look at playing more regularly elsewhere.

Tottenham even have one midfielder already coming in this summer as Lucas Bergvall will join up with the club for pre-season action.

Spurs hijacked Barcelona’s move for Bergvall after the January window had closed, striking a deal to bring in the teenager this summer.

Bergvall is currently featuring in the Djurgarden first team until heading to North London this summer and it’s fair to say that Tottenham fans are excited to see him in action.

Swedish pundit on Lucas Bergvall

The 18-year-old has dazzled in Swedish football and has earned a reputation as something of a wonderkid.

Bergvall looks to be a player who can really glide with the ball through midfield whilst also being able to create key moments in the final third.

Tottenham fans can’t wait to see him in pre-season and Swedish pundit Martin Aslund has now offered his view.

Aslund – a former Djurgarden player himself – has been quoted by Nyheter 24 as saying that he thinks Bergvall is an ‘incredible’ player.

However, Aslund doesn’t believe that Bergvall will be able to replace James Maddison in Tottenham’s midfield.

Aslund hopes that he is wrong but seemingly has fears that Bergvall will be a bit-part player at Spurs, at least initially.

“Will he replace James Maddison at Tottenham? I hope I’m wrong and that he does, but I don’t think so,” said Aslund. “People take what I say the wrong way, Lucas is an incredible footballer,” he added.

Bergvall could join Maddison in midfield

We would not be at all surprised to see Bergvall join Maddison in the Tottenham midfield at times.

A real defensive midfielder may need to play alongside them but Postecoglou has previously shown that he is willing to play two forward-thinking midfielders.

Two of Reo Hatate, Aaron Mooy, Matt O’Riley and David Turnbull would play ahead of Callum McGregor in Postecoglou’s Celtic midfield.

Pape Matar Sarr has shown his box-to-box qualities for Tottenham this season and we feel there may be scope for Bergvall to link up with Maddison in the same midfield, rather than it being a case of one or the other.

Tottenham may need to be patient with Bergvall given his age and the hefty jump from Swedish football to Premier League action, but he seems a great fit for Postecoglou’s attack-minded approach and if he impacts the game going forward whilst contributing off the ball, he will get chances to shine – whether Maddison is included or not.
