He was taken off in the first half in a match with Alavez in October 2021 after suffering chest pain and it was later discovered to be caused by an arrhythmia.

According to ESPN, he was advised it would be a risk to continue playing so he hung up his boots in December 2021.

In a press conference, Aguero said: “This conference is to announce I have decided to stop playing professional football.

“It is a very difficult moment. The decision I have taken for my health; the problem I had a month and a half ago.

“I am very proud for my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at 5.

“I want to thank Atletico Madrid, who took a chance on me when I was 18, and Manchester City — everyone knows who I feel about City and how well they treated me there.”

Sergio Aguero’s last Man City goal

Just like in his first game, Sergio Aguero marked his last Premier League match for City by scoring a brace after coming on off the bench.

The only Premier League team Sergio Aguero didn’t score against

Erling Haaland has scored against every Premier League opponent he has faced since signing for City, something Aguero wasn’t able to achieve.

But the legendary striker did come incredibly close, with just one team eluding him for a decade: Bolton Wanderers.

Aguero only came up against Bolton once, in his first start for the club, but didn’t score in the 3-2 win and was then left on the bench for the return fixture.

He did face Bolton when playing for Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup but was even unable to score in that match, in which he was sent off for spitting at Matty Taylor.

Is Lionel Messi Sergio Aguero’s son’s godfather?

Yes, Lionel Messi is the godfather of Aguero’s son, Benjamin.

Aguero and Messi are long-term friends and often roomed together when travelling on away trips for Argentina.

Aguero was left ‘in shock’ when he discovered Messi was leaving Barcelona in the same summer he joined, via ESPN, and previously said on their friendship to Diario Sport: “He always complains, we are like an old married couple.

“I always fall asleep with the TV on and when I wake up the next morning he is always complaining to me.

“He arrives at the hotel and is instantly take a shower while I’m just sitting talking on my mobile phone.

“Then he will remind me that we need to go down to dinner and we do not have time.”

Messi wrote the foreword in Aguero’s auto-biography Born to Rise and said: “I can clearly remember the first day that I saw Kun, that moment has remained etched in my memory.

“Back then I didn’t know who he was or even what he was called, let alone that I would later meet him in person or that, from then on, we would become great friends.

“We roomed together at the Under-20 World Cup in Holland and we hit it off really well. So from that moment on, we have always shared a room together.

“Don’t worry we are just friends! When he is asleep I have to tiptoe to the toilet and stop my phone from vibrating in case it wakes him up. He is like a brother.”

Sergio Aguero’s last-minute goal to win the Premier League

Though he scored well over 400 goals in his remarkable career, Sergio Aguero will always be remembered for one goal above any other.

In his first season at City, Aguero clinched the club’s first Premier League title when he scored the last-gasp, stunning winner against QPR to send the Etihad into delirium.

It has already gone down as the best moment in Premier League history and it will take some topping.

Why Sergio Aguero had ‘Kun’ on the back of his shirt

Aguero always wore ‘Kun Aguero’ on the back of his shirt at City, above either his No16 or later his No10.

‘Kun’ became Aguero’s nickname in childhood, given to him by his grandparents, as they believed he resembled the character ‘Kum-Kum’ from the anime Wanpaku Omukashi Kumu Kumu, Aguero’s favourite show as a child.

Explaining the nickname to the BBC in 2008, Aguero said: “Kun actually represents a Japanese cartoon character from my favourite series that I used to watch as a child.

“I coined the nickname Kun because of my resemblance to the character, who was actually named Kum Kum.

“My grandparents were the first ones who gave me the name. I think my nickname is different in comparison to most athletes and so I have grown to appreciate it because it’s unique.

“It’s not everyday an athlete is nicknamed after a cartoon character!”

Speaking in February 2024, Aguero discussed what would have to happen if he were to make a heroic return to football.

He has joked that he expects to get a call from his boyhood club Independiente, who are now managed by former teammate Carlos Tevez, but while his health is progressing he is not cleared to return to the pitch.

He said, via The Sun: “Sometimes things are invented. I repeat that the cardiologist said that I am well, that it is important that I am in good health.

“But to return to training at the First Division level, I would need to undergo a lot of tests.”

Tevez would love him to link up with his side, he said: “Who doesn’t want to have Kun. I do – first as a team-mate and now as a coach, even if it was just for 10 or 15 minutes.”
