Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has sanctioned contract extensions for Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk, despite growing concerns about FFP. The pair arrived at Stamford Bridge last season for a combined cost of over £180million, but both have been criticised for their below-par performances.

As per The Evening Standard, documents released by the FA reveal Fernandez and Mudryk have both been granted contract extensions by Chelsea. The papers detail Fernandez has eight years remaining on his existing deal, with Mudryk boasting seven.

It means both players will be over the age of 30 by the time their contracts expire, with Boehly and co. maintaining their policy of tying down young talent to long-term deals. However, it comes at a time when Chelsea are already feeling the pinch of FFP regulations, with the capital club having recently announced hefty pre-tax losses.

Accounts published by Chelsea FC Holdings Ltd last week confirmed the club had lost £91.1million during the 2022/23 campaign - Boehly’s first in charge of the two-time European champions. It’s a small improvement on the £121.4million loss from the previous 2021/22 season, but Chelsea are adamant they won’t fall foul of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Two clubs in the division have already been punished by the Premier League for PSR breaches, with Everton and Nottingham Forest handed points deductions. And Chelsea will want to stay on the right side of the rules to ensure they don't suffer a similar punishment.

Chelsea chief Boehly has yet to see much - if any - return on his hefty investment. The American businessman has presided over £1billion worth of transfer dealings since arriving at the Premier League giant.

What’s more, it was revealed earlier this week that Chelsea had broken the record for the amount of money spent on agent’s fees by one particular club. It’s claimed the six-time English champions paid in excess of £75million to agents during the 2023/24 campaign.

On the pitch, Mauricio Pochettino will lead his Chelsea side back to Wembley for the second time this season, with Manchester City their opponent in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend. Winning the FA Cup could represent their last chance of securing European football for next season, which if they miss out on yet again, could cause more financial problems.
