Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola's side's can help make Champions League history when they meet Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final

By the end of Wednesday night, the final four teams left in the Champions League would have been confirmed and history could have been made in the process.

Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund have already booked their place in the semi-final stage after they both triumphed in their respective quarter-final clashes. Both were thrilling second legs, with the French giants getting the better of Barcelona 4-1 on the night, 6-4 on aggregate.

The Blaugrana came into the second meeting at the Camp Nou with the upper hand after winning 3-2 in Paris last week. However, goals from Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha and a Kylian Mbappe brace was enough to dump Xavi's side out of the competition.

In Germany, Bundesliga titans Dortmund won 4-2 against Atletico Madrid, progressing into the last four following a 5-4 aggregate victory. In the 70th minute, Edin Terzic's side were on their way out, but goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer turned the tie on its head.

The second set of games will be contested on Wednesday night, with Arsenal travelling to Bayern Munich while Manchester City welcome Real Madrid to the Etihad. Both ties are finely poised after enthralling first-leg contests.

The Gunners drew 2-2 with Thomas Tuchel's men at the Emirates in a clash that saw the lead change hands. It was a similar story in the other contest, with Pep Guardiola's side leading twice in the Santiago Bernabeu only to draw 3-3 with Los Blancos.

If two goals are scored in the second-leg clashes of the aforementioned fixtures, this round will become the highest-scoring Champions League quarter-final round of all time, beating the 2003/04 edition of the competition.

With 29 goals scored so far, it seems almost certain that given the way the previous games have gone the record of 30 will be broken. Back in 03/04, there were some stunning aggregate scorelines that served as quite the shock.

Monaco progressed past Real Madrid via the since scrapped away goals rule after the ties ended 5-5 on aggregate. Chelsea dumped out the iconic Arsenal 'Invincibles' side with a 3-2 victory.

Deportivo ran out 5-4 winners against AC Milan while Jose Mourinho's Porto outfit beat Lyon 4-2 on their way to winning the entire competition. The self-proclaimed 'special one' beat Monaco 3-0 in the final, which was the first of two Champions Leagues for the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss.
