Chris Sutton has named the Arsenal star who he would name as the Premier League player of the season, insisting that they have had a huge impact on Mikel Arteta’s side.
Of course, Gunners fans are still coming to terms with the disappointment of their latest result. Right now, Arsenal look to be underdogs in the Premier League title race.
But there is no question at all that this season has been another step in the right direction for the club. They have built on the disappointment of last year. And they are now fighting for glory in the Premier League and Champions League.
Whatever happens this year, exciting times appear to be on their way at the Emirates. Arteta has built a squad which should continue to improve for a few more years.
One of the final pieces in the jigsaw, of course, was the deal to sign Declan Rice. The 25-year-old became Arsenal’s record signing in the summer.
Some may have wondered how Rice would cope with that pressure. However, he has absolutely thrived, producing a number of massive performances.
Rice struggled against Aston Villa at the weekend. But, speaking on The Monday Night Club as Cole Palmer was stealing the show for Chelsea against Everton, Chris Sutton picked out the Arsenal star when asked to name his Premier League player of the season.
“I think it’s difficult. Cole Palmer comes into it, just because I’ve seen him score a hat-trick this evening. But Declan Rice I think. Just for his influence on this Arsenal team as much as anything. I think he’s made a huge impact,” he said.
If Arsenal do go on and win the title, many are going to talk about Rice’s performances in the opening months of the season.
Arsenal did not make the flying start they made last season. Their performances were much less thrilling. And they just had to find ways to win to keep themselves in the mix.
Often, it was Rice who showed them the way. His goals against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Luton were so important. And that allowed some of his teammates to find their best form again.
His doubters will point to the price-tag and suggest that it should be expected. But Arsenal fans know better than most that a huge fee does not necessarily mean a brilliant signing.
Rice has taken the pressure on his shoulders and shone. And he is definitely in contention to be named as the player of the season.
