Chelsea’s only representation in any way in the Champions League this season has been players who have recently left the club.
Other than Ian Maatsen on loan at Borussia Dortmund, it has been Blues fans watching those who have departed them take part in the biggest club competition on the planet.
Both Premier League sides who were still in the competition crashed out at the quarter-final stage last night, something which does the English UEFA coefficient and Chelsea’s chances of playing in Europe next season no good.
Manchester City, who the Blues take on in the FA Cup semi-finals at the weekend at Wembley, were beaten on penalties by Real Madrid, with Antonio Rudiger scoring the decisive spot kick.
A former Chelsea player who was not so successful though was Mateo Kovacic, who was trusted with taking one of City’s penalties, only to see it saved.
There may have been one or two eyebrows raised amongst Blues supporters seeing him step up, with it difficult to recall a moment he would have been trusted with such responsibility in front of goal at Stamford Bridge.
Penalty duties were almost exclusively left at the door of Jorginho, who also crashed out of the competition last night with Arsenal.
Chelsea will likely be pleased by the £30m transfer fee they recieved for Kovacic last summer, especially considering there was just a year left on his contract at the time.
The midfield looks very different right now at Stamford Bridge, with some younger talents with immense potential filling the positions in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentine’s recent injury woes could see him ruled out of the FA Cup match against City at the weekend, potentially seeing Mauricio Pochettino resort to the partnership he used on Monday of Caicedo alongside Conor Gallagher in the middle of the park.
