‘Plays with your mind’… 22-year-old has now admitted he regrets staying at Chelsea last summer

One player looks like he has regrets about staying at Chelsea last summer.

Chelsea sold a lot of players last year, while many names also left the club on loan.

For example, the likes of Mason Mount and Kai Havertz were sold to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, while Romelu Lukaku and Kepa Arrizabalaga secured temporary moves to other sides.

Others such as Ian Maatsen and Deivid Washington could have benefitted from a loan spell away from the club but remained at Stamford Bridge in the end.

However, it now appears that one man who decided to stay at Chelsea has some regrets about his decision.

Player regrets staying at Chelsea last summer

At the beginning of the season, Mauricio Pochettino had a lot of options for the left-back position.

Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella and Maatsen were the natural options for the role, while Levi Colwill eventually became the regular there.

It saw Maatsen get little game time, and the Dutch youngster has now admitted that he probably should have left Chelsea last summer.

When asked if he ever regretted staying in west London, Maatsen told The Telegraph: “Yeah, it plays with your mind, but I still believed my chance would come by being patient, working hard.

“For some reason, it didn’t work out and afterwards you have to find a solution and the deal happened between [Borussia] Dortmund and Chelsea. Also I need to thank Chelsea that I’m here and they gave me that opportunity.”

Will Ian Maatsen finally leave Chelsea permanently?

Maatsen is currently on loan at Dortmund and has had temporary spells at Burnley, Coventry City and Charlton Athletic in the past.

Chilwell, Cucurella and Colwill have all picked up injuries this season, so left-back has been a bit of a problem position for Pochettino.

However, it does not look like Maatsen will be returning to help the team out there.

According to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, Dortmund want to keep Maatsen at the club and the 22-year-old, who has a £35m release clause in his contract, is very happy there.

Chelsea fans, then, should not be expecting Maatsen to return to Stamford Bridge this summer.
