Tottenham have missed out on a chance to finish in the Premier League top four this season, following a recent drop in form.
It means that Spurs will miss out on a return to the Champions League, with Aston Villa securing fourth for the campaign – while a fifth Champions League place was awarded to Italy and Germany.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will naturally be disappointed with the way his side have ended the campaign, with the latest 2-0 defeat to Manchester City launching the Spurs manager into a rant.
Four defeats in five games has come as a huge blow, but with one game to go, there’s still a task to secure a Europa League qualification place.
The Lilywhites sit in fifth and could finish as low as sixth in the Premier League, which may not be enough to earn a place in the second tier of European football.
So with that said, here’s a look at all of the Europa League qualification permutations for Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United.
The equation for Tottenham is simple.
If they avoid defeat against Sheffield United on the final day, then they will confirm fifth place and avoid uncertainty surrounding their place in the Europa League.
Should Spurs lose, then things get complicated as London rivals Chelsea could overtake them on the final day if they manage to beat Bournemouth.
Sixth place could secure Europa League qualification for the Lilywhites, however, it will depend on the outcome of the FA Cup final.
Should Manchester City win, then Ange Postecoglou will be gearing his team up for Europa League football.
However, if Manchester United pull off a cup upset, then they will land that qualification at the expense of Tottenham, plunging them into the Europa Conference League.
In all, it means that the odds will firmly favour Spurs as they have their fate in their hands, while an unlikely outcome would have to occur for them to drop out of the Europa League places if they are defeated.
Tottenham last won a trophy in 2008, landing the League Cup by beating close rivals Chelsea 2-1.
Since then, it’s been a barren spell with the club in an endless pursuit of chasing glory while just coming up short.
With a return to European competition next season, Spurs have an extra shot at landing some silverware that has eluded them in 16 years.
Add to that another summer transfer market that will allow Postecoglou to build the foundations of a first-team squad he wants and it paints a potentially bright future for the Lilywhites.
While it has been a disappointing end to an otherwise bright campaign, it’s clear that progress has been made and there’s plenty more room for Tottenham to grow.
