Arsenal legend Alan Smith has given his thoughts on transfer speculation linking his former club with a big-money summer transfer move for Newcastle United goal machine Alexander Isak.

The Swedish international has been one of the Premier League's star players this year and was on the scoresheet with another brace against Sheffield United at the weekend. Isak now has 19 goals this season in 26 appearances and is a contender for the Golden Boot.

Last week, The Sun reported that Arsenal and Barcelona are both interested in signing the player this summer, although they would have to fork out £100 million to Newcastle United to even have a bid considered. Nonetheless, in such fine form, that type of fee could be considered reasonable for the marksman.

Speaking about the link Smith admitted that Isak would be the perfect player to slot into Arsenal's system under Mikel Arteta, but did cast doubt on the feasibility of a transfer. He told Crypto Casino: “Alexander Isak is an outstanding player and I’ve been very impressed with him this season. His finishing is top notch and he’s of a style that would definitely complement what Arsenal have already. He wouldn’t look out of place technically at the Emirates and he’s now a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, which is always an important trait to possess as a forward – so he’d certainly be a great signing for Arsenal this summer.

“However, he cost Newcastle around £60m, so he’d cost Arsenal a lot more – so I question whether Arsenal have got the funds and whether Newcastle want to sell him. Whether Newcastle have to for Financial Fair Play reasons is a different question, so we’ll see what happens, but I’d be surprised if Newcastle allow him to go to what is essentially a title rival if they want to keep pushing forward and stay on an upwards trajectory.”

Isak joined Newcastle United in August 2022 for a fee of £63 million and is believed to have been 'heavily scouted' by Arsenal before making the move to Tyneside. He has since gone on to prove himself as a Premier League goalscorer.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Isak's Sweden teammate Viktor Gyökeres, who is impressing for Sporting Lisbon. Ivan Toney had also been touted as an option, but interest in the Brentford man now appears to have cooled.
