Ruben Amorim seemingly took a veiled dig at Marcus Rashford as the Manchester United manager praised Mason Mount's desire to play "really badly".
WHAT HAPPENED?
Mount, making his first start in 96 days, played a crucial role in United's 3-2 Europa League win against Bodo/Glimt. His performance, though goalless, included a near-miss that rattled the crossbar, further showcasing his intent to make an impact. And as he was taken off in the second half, received a spirited embrace from Amorim as a mark of appreciation for his efforts.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
During the midweek press conference, Amorim made a pointed remark about Rashford’s recent form, emphasising the need for the England international to display greater desire. "I will try to help him. But he has to be the first one to want it," Amroim warned in a likely reference to the forward’s need to show more hunger. In contrast, Amorim was effusive about Mount and hailed the former Chelsea man for his urge to get back in the fold.
WHAT AMORIM SAID
"First thing is he is working really hard," Amorim told reporters. "And then you have to understand the human also. He wants this really badly. That is the most important thing. I think he has proven to all of you that he is a talented player. He was a European champion. So we believe a lot in him. He has to stay fit. And like all the guys in the team, they are quality players, they have to improve and believe in themselves.
"Today, he did a great job, and you see in some moments and details that you can see Mason Mount is a proper footballer. So we believe a lot in him, I especially believe a lot in Mason Mount."
DID YOU KNOW?
After an eight-game Premier League goal drought, the forward managed to find the net during United’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich on Sunday. However, his performance appears to have fallen short of Amorim’s expectations, as he started on the bench during the midweek European clash - an indication that the forward must do more at Carrington to seal a regular starting berth.
WHAT NEXT?
Rashford’s opportunity to regain Amorim’s confidence might come as United prepare to face Everton on Sunday, followed by a high-stakes trip to Arsenal next Wednesday. With the team languishing in 12th place in the Premier League, Amorim’s focus on work ethic and determination seems aimed at inspiring a turnaround for the Red Devils.
