Arsenal were able to record a 3-0 Champions League win against Monaco at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The hosts dominated the majority of this Champions League encounter, but were only 1-0 up at the break as Bukayo Saka poked home after some good work from Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Saka and Kai Havertz added gloss to the scoreline late on, but Arsenal ought to have been home and dry long before then, and would have been had they not allowed so many opportunities to go begging.
Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli all missed more than one very presentable chance to score each. Whilst he will have been pleased with his side’s overall performance, Mikel Arteta will have been irked by the wayward finishing that was on display.
After the final whistle, Monaco manager Adi Hutter was the first to concede that the North London outfit had been the superior team on the pitch.
As quoted by Football.London, he said: “Arsenal deserved this win. They were the better team. I was happy with the first 20 mins and after half time. We had three opportunities to score an equaliser. The decisive moment was the second goal. We gave them lots of gifts.”
However, the Austrian coach also called attention to how many chances the Gunners missed in the game.
He added: “We were lucky that Arsenal missed many chances. In some moment I had the feeling we were close to the equaliser and then we gave them the gift in the second half. At this level that’s not acceptable.”
There was an element of fortune to Havertz’s goal, whilst Jesus’ barren run went on. The Brazilian has netted just once in his last 32 outings for the Gunners, across all competitions.
This display ought to reinforce to Arteta his need for a new goalscorer. Arsenal have been told they need to sign a striker before, and it needs to be the club’s top priority in the upcoming January transfer window.
Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres would be perfect for Arsenal in this regard, as the Swedish sensation has been one of the most prolific forwards in Europe this season.
