Al-Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo stopped to allow a young fan to take a selfie as security guards closed in during a Saudi Pro League outing on Friday.
Ronaldo scored both goals as Al-Nassr got the better of 10-man Damac in Riyadh. At one moment in the game, though, a supporter darted onto the pitch, followed by members of security.
As one security person attempts to remove the fan, and two more watch on, Ronaldo appears to wave them away. He calms the situation, allowing the fan to take a selfie and give him a hug, before the youngster is finally led away.
It was far from the first time the 39-year-old has been approached by a pitch invader mid-match. He has often attempted to be accommodating towards young supporters, though there has also been the occasional bit of trouble.
During Euro 2024, Ronaldo was approached by a pitch invader during Portugal's group game against Turkey. Stewards were slow to intervene, prompting Selecao boss Roberto Martinez to express his concerns to the media.
"It is a concern because today we were lucky that the intentions of the fans were good," Martinez said at the time. "We all love a fan who recognises the big stars and the big icons in their life. We all agree with that. But there is a very, very difficult moments if those intentions are wrong – the players are exposed and we need to be careful with that.
"I don't think that should happen on a football pitch. There is a lot of security and a lot of protection and it should not happen. And probably we should give a message to the fans that it's not [the] right way."
There have been further intrusions from fans since, both in Saudi Arabia and Europe. One such instance came in September, during Portugal's UEFA Nations League victory over Scotland.
Despite these distractions, Ronaldo has continued to perform for club and country. He scored his 900th career goal earlier in September, for Portugal against Croatia, adding one against Scotland and four across two Nations League meetings with Poland.
At club level, he has scored 15 times across 18 matches in all competitions for Al-Nassr this season. Nine of those have come in the Saudi Pro League, while four goals in the AFC Champions League elite have helped Ronaldo and his colleagues reach the knockout stages with three league phase games to spare.
Ronaldo's nine league goals put him second in the standings behind Al-Hilal's Aleksandar Mitrovic. Karim Benzema is just behind on eight, and the French striker's Al-Ittihad side sit top of the league, two points clear of Al-Hilal and five above Al-Nassr with a game in hand.
