Christian Eriksen says the players must take the blame for their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

United were comfortably beaten by Palace on Monday night as a brace from Michael Olise and goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell sealed the win for the home side.

Their hopes were dealt a huge blow ahead of the game after Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay both missed the trip to Selhurst Park, but Eriksen agrees that the sorry injury situation was not enough of an excuse for the dire nature of their performance.

United's loss means they are now eighth in the Premier League with a far worse goal difference than both Newcastle and Chelsea and will only qualify for Europe if they finish above one of the two, or improbably defeat Man City in the FA Cup final.

Speaking after the match, Eriksen made an honest admission that the players had to own up to their poor performance on the pitch: "A big disappointment. We just had an off-day and we weren't in it," he told BBC Sport.

"It is what it is. We can't really change the injury things. We have to do what we can on the pitch to change it. Today it didn't matter who we played. Everyone could have done better.

"I don't know what the conclusion is for how it went. We weren't good enough. We tried to do what we could but we were not good enough. We'll take the blame as players."
