Nine Tottenham stars may never play for club again after Ange Postecoglou admission

Ange Postecoglou was strikingly open and honest about the need for 'exits' this summer as he looks to build a Tottenham Hotspur squad capable of playing in his distinctive style. "I've got to build a squad I think can play our football," he said.

"For that to happen, there has to be exits. I can’t just keep everyone here and keep bringing in players. Whether it’s Liverpool or Arsenal, if you look at the beginning of their journeys, by the time they have success, the team’s almost unrecognisable."

While some players, such as Giovani Lo Celso, may be exit-bound, they also could have a small part to play over the final four matches of the season. Nine others, however, may already have played their last game for Spurs...

Oliver Skipp

Once dubbed a 'future Tottenham captain' by Jose Mourinho, Skipp has been on the books in north London since 2008. Now 23 years old, the midfielder has started only four Premier League games this season and has not featured whatsoever in Postecoglou's first team since a four-minute cameo against Everton in early February.

Ben Davies

Time may be finally up for Tottenham's longest-serving player, who has more than 300 appearances for the club on his CV but will miss the remainder of the season with a calf injury. Postecoglou needs pace at centre-back and adventure at left-back, neither of which 31-year-old Davies can provide, despite being a solid Premier League player and a faithful servant.

Timo Werner

The German picked up a hamstring issue during Thursday night's defeat to Chelsea, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. His loan move from RB Leipzig includes a modest £17million buy option, but as yet there has been no indication from Postecoglou that the club plan to trigger it.

Bryan Gil

It has never quite worked out for the Spaniard in three years at Spurs, and reports indicate that he is now desperate for regular first-team football. He certainly hasn't been getting that under Postecoglou, who last started Gil against Manchester City in early December and brought him off at half-time.

Japhet Tanganga

A disastrous loan move to Augsburg was cut short in January, and Tanganga has flourished since being sent out to Millwall. It remains to be seen whether the Championship side make a permanent proposal for the 25-year-old, who will surely want regular minutes which can't be guaranteed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Joe Rodon

Leeds United will be kicking themselves after failing to include a permanent buy option in the loan agreement which brought him to Elland Road last summer. The centre-back has been a vital member of their promotion push and could join the Whites permanently once the season concludes.

Djed Spence

Another stuttering season out on loan for the right-back is unlikely to see him thrust straight into the first-team picture by Postecolgou. This summer may feel like the appropriate time for the Spurs board to try and recoup some of the £20m they paid to Nottingham Forest two years ago, providing Genoa choose not to exercise their £8.6m buy option.

Sergio Reguilon

The former Real Madrid left-back has not played a single game for Tottenham since 2021/22. Following loan moves to Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, Reguilon joined Brentford in January, and his bright performances are sure to have sparked transfer interest in case the Bees are unable to meet Spurs' financial demands.

Tanguy Ndombele

It has been more than two years since Tottenham's record signing played a competitive match for the club. Three separate loan stints have not resulted in a permanent exit for Ndombele, who pockets a reported £200,000 a week and has one year remaining on his contract. Club chairman Daniel Levy would surely love to find a buyer for the midfielder this summer, with Galatasaray seemingly happy to let his loan spell run its course.
