Roudhan Beckwith was a keen football player

A Liverpool FC fan died following a fall while on holiday with friends.

Roudhan Beckwith, 20, fell from an apartment window in the early hours of June 16, 2023 while on holiday in Brussels. His parents, Steven and Josephine, paid tribute to him in a statement at an inquest at Bradford Coroners' Court.

They described their son, who was from Holmfirth, as a keen footballer and cricketer. Roudhan was described as a best friend to his younger brother and a role model, reports YorkshireLive.

The 20-year-old was a former pupil at Holmfirth High School and Greenhead College, Roudhan been studying biology at York University at the time of his death. His parent said Roudhan was a big fan of Liverpool FC.

Roudhan had got his first job, aged 14, as a football referee and later went on to work at Holmfirth Vineyard where he impressed colleagues with his work ethic. He had played for many years for Hepworth Juniors and had lifelong friends from his playing days.

His parents said Roudhan had "always strived to live his best life" and had developed a love for travel and food. He was said to be laid back but also a "perfectionist with a big heart". Steven and Josephine said they had been amazed by how many lives Roudhan had touched with his "kindness and work ethic".

The inquest into his death heard that Roudhan and his friends had been out for drinks in Brussels, with Roudhan consuming around six pints, along with food, during the course of the day. The group returned to their apartment in the Anderlecht in the early hours where Roudhan was said to have possibly been sick.

Although no-one witnessed what happened next, it was thought that Roudhan had fallen out of a Velux-style window which was above his sofa/camp bed. His friends were asleep at the time and did not see what happened. The window was later found to be half open.

The inquest heard that it was possible that he had got up to get some fresh air at the window and had tumbled out, although this was described as "speculation" by the senior coroner Martin Fleming as there were no witnesses. Roudhan suffered multiple injuries and was found in the street below.

Armed police then stormed into the apartment and made arrests at gunpoint as they investigated Roudhan's death. Police concluded there had been no suspicious circumstances. Mr Fleming said that it was clear that Roudhan was a much-loved son and brother and an "excellent scholar" who was living life to the full and had a "bright and promising future ahead of him."

Mr Fleming said Roudhan's friend had suggested that he might have been leaning out of the window to get some fresh air but the coroner emphasised this was speculation.

Roudhan's dad said he wondered if the camp bed had "tipped". He said the room had been described as "very hot" and it had been a warm day. Steven said he had concerns about the safety of the window in question, he said: "When I read about it, it does worry me about small children, if a 20-year-old can fall out of it."

Mr Fleming said it was possible that Roudhan had "reached up" for fresh air to cool down. He concluded: "It is more likely than not that he passed away accidentally."

Steven and Josephine told the inquest their son's University results had come out just three hours after he had died and he hadn't got to see that he had passed his exams. Steven added: "The University are graduating him this year. He will graduate with a BSc. We are going to the graduation and will be walking to it from Holmfirth."
