Joel Glazer has done something at Manchester United which INEOS strongly disagree with.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% stake in the Red Devils uniquely saw him gain control of football operations at Old Trafford, but there was one decision made before his acquisition which would never have happened under the 71-year-old’s stewardship.
So, what did Glazer do which INEOS disagree with? Let’s take a look…
Well – according to Football Transfers – the decision to hand Marcus Rashford a huge salary has raised eyebrows at Manchester United.
It is said that Glazer’s move to tie the England international down to a £425,000-a-week deal running until 2028 is not something INEOS would have sanctioned, had they been in place at the time.
Football Transfers explain that the astronomical salary was approved by John Murtough and green lit by Glazer.
Furthermore, it is also said that the decision to hand Rashford, who Bastian Schweinsteiger wants to see at another club, £425,000-a-week actually played a part in Murtough stepping down as Director of Football at Old Trafford.
There comes a time where handing a footballer a salary like this actually does more harm than good.
Rashford impressively scored 30 goals and provided ten assists in 56 appearances last season before signing his new contract, in what was arguably the greatest campaign of his entire career.
However, the Manchester United No.10 has looked a vastly different player this season, one severely lacking in motivation and drive, with just eight goals and five assists in 39 games.
Nobody knows for sure apart from Rashford himself, but this lack of hunger on the football pitch could be put down to his eye-watering salary.
Would you still feel motivated after seeing almost half a million pounds enter your bank account each week, regardless of how well you perform?
Simply put, Manchester United have to be more tactical with salary offerings and negotiate deals which don’t give players a financial ceiling – Rashford is highly unlikely to earn this much anywhere else, so there may be a feeling of completion in his mind, and a reluctance to keep improving.
The same can be said for Raphael Varane and Casemiro, who incredibly earn £340,000 and £350,000-a-week respectively at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial still making £250,000-a-week and Antony sits on £200,000-a-week.
Hopefully, this bizarre situation changes under INEOS.
