Chelsea need to add some goals to their squad next season, and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko could be the answer.

A poor Premier League campaign has seen Chelsea float around mid-table all season long, with the Blues' hopes of playing European football next season fading weekly. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Christopher Nkuku has been ruled out for the majority through injury, and with Nicolas Jackson yet to prove himself as a consistent number nine, a new striker could be on the cards in the summer transfer window.

Sesko has been linked with a move to Chelsea amongst other strikers, with the RB Leipzig forward scoring 15 goals in his first season with the club. The Slovenian international reportedly has a release clause of £43million that will become active in the summer, a price that could potentially tempt Mauricio Pochettino's side.

So, if Sesko was to make the move to Chelsea in the summer, what could happen in the upcoming 2024/25 campaign? Let's take a look.

Chelsea's 2024/25 season simulated with Benjamin Sesko

To set up this simulation, we used Football Manager 2024 to move Sesko to Chelsea in the summer transfer window before simulating the 2024/25 season. This is how the RB Leipzig striker performed for the Blues.

Sesko was thrown straight into the starting XI by Pochettino, but after scoring just once in his first eight starts, the Slovenian was dropped from the side. At the end of the season, Sesko had made 27 appearances for the Blues, with 15 from the bench.

A switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 saw Pochettino move Nkunku to the striker role, and the Frenchman flourished, scoring 17 goals and ending the season as the club's top scorer. As for Sesko, the 20-year-old struggled, scoring five goals across all competitions, less than Mykhailo Mudryk (6), Jackson (7), Raheem Sterling (7), and Cole Palmer (16).

At the end of the 2024/25 season, Football Manager 2024 put together an overall best Chelsea XI, based on performances, statistics, and other metrics. This is what it looked like:

Full Chelsea best XI: (4-3-3): Petrovic; James, Badiashile, Fofana, Chilwell; Caicedo, Fernandez, Gallagher; Palmer, Nkunku, Mudryk.

Sesko didn't make the Chelsea best XI, with Nkunku starting alongside Palmer and Mudryk in the front three. Romeo Lavia missed out on the midfield spots dispute making 35 appearances, while Benoit Badiashile partnered Wesley Fofana in the heart of the defence.

With little to no injuries in the squad, Pochettino could play his strongest XI more often than not, and Chelsea really improved. A fantastic Premier League campaign saw the Blues end the season in fourth, securing a spot in the Champions League for the following campaign.

20 wins, 13 draws and just five defeats saw Chelsea end the season on 73 points, two more than Manchester United in fifth and eight fewer than Liverpool in third. The Blues' problem wasn't losing games as they ended the campaign with the joint-fewest defeats (5), but draws, with Pochettino's side drawing 13 games, the most out of any team in the league.

Away from the league, the Blues weren't able to win any trophies. A 3-0 loss to Liverpool saw Chelsea's FA Cup run end in the quarter-finals, while a 4-3 defeat to Crystal Palace saw them knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round.

Overall, FM24 predicts that Sesko could struggle at Chelsea, with Nkunku's return to the squad limiting his game time. With the forward having a difficult time scoring along with his low average rating, the simulation suggests that there may be better options for the Blues to pursue this summer.
