Newcastle United did not enjoy the most productive of transfer windows but, so far at least, it has not mattered.

Indeed, Newcastle remain unbeaten in the Premier League after coming from behind to beat Wolves on Sunday.

To say Eddie Howe’s side are playing particularly well would perhaps be an overstatement but, frankly, results are far more important. At some point, the overall performances will need to improve but, for now, taking almost maximum points is a pretty stunning return.

After a transfer window so bad it was slammed by club legend Alan Shearer, not starting the season well would have made for a miserable time of things.

While it would be nice for the Newcastle United manager to see his team turn on the style, they are showing an awful lot of character to grind the results out.

Team captain Bruno Guimaraes certainly summed that up with his message to Sandro Tonali.

Tonali, who was perhaps unlucky not to start at Molineux, took to Instagram after the game, captioning a photo of himself in action: “We fight. We push. We win.”

Bruno then responded to the post, writing: “We never give up.”

Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali could be building something at Newcastle

Before Tonali’s ban last season, it wasn’t always apparent that the Italian and Guimaraes could operate in a successful midfield together. Despite their obvious quality, things alongside Joelinton just weren’t clicking.

Still, Tonali has now helped improve two results when coming off the bench. Howe was delighted with his cameo against Tottenham before the international break, after all.

Though Guimaraes wasn’t quite at his best against Wolves, the idea of those two developing a successful partnership is very exciting indeed.

Hopefully, we’ll get to see them from the start at Fulham next weekend…
