Confusion has arisen over whether Barry Bannan picked up his fifth yellow card for Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby.
Sheffield Wednesday notched their second successive Championship win in dramatic fashion after Jamal Lowe’s late goal sent them back to S6 with all three points after a 2-1 win.
The Owls struggled in particular in the first half of action, but it was a brilliant turnaround by Danny Rohl’s side, with Barry Bannan being at the epicentre of that, scoring a marvellous goal on his 35th birthday.
Bannan’s performance really showed just how crucial he still is for the side at his age, and there is no doubt that Rohl’s side quite simply doesn’t tick without him in-the centre-of-the-park.
However, the Scotsman picked up a yellow card during the game, to which there was plenty of confusion as to whether that was his fifth of the season, to which he would be suspended for the next game, and that uncertainty has now been cleared up.
When Bannan was handed a yellow card in the 21st minute, there was uncertainty as to whether that was his third or in fact his fifth yellow card of the Championship season, with many databases suggesting the former.
However, as confirmed by Alex Miller, the Sheffield Wednesday ace has now been handed his fifth caution of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, and will now be absent for the upcoming clash against Preston North End at home.
The Owls man has started every single game so far for the side, wearing the captain’s armband on all 16 occasions.

In recent history, there has been uncertainty over when Bannan’s long tenure in S6 will come to an end, and also how Sheffield Wednesday will deal with the repercussions of such damage.
The Championship clash against Preston North End will be a window into when that time comes and how the Owls deal without having the Scotsman in their side, and it will certainly be difficult for them to go without his leadership and skill in the middle.
There is no understating just how crucial Bannan still is to the side, even at 35-years-old, and Rohl will have plenty of difficulty programming his side to work around his absence.
