Former Liverpool goalkeeper Ádám Bogdán believes Mohamed Salah could leave Liverpool this summer, although he admits he also wouldn’t be surprised if the Egyptian signed a new contract at Anfield.

Salah’s future has been brought into question recently after he was seen arguing with Jürgen Klopp during Liverpool’s draw with West Ham. The Reds’ outgoing boss though insisted the incident had been resolved immediately afterward, and Salah was back in the starting line-up against Tottenham a week later.

Nevertheless, with his contract set to expire next year and interest from Saudi Arabia likely to re-emerge in the summer, there are questions over his future. The Athletic reported last week that Liverpool is planning for next season with Salah on board.

Bogdán though admits he can see Salah leaving over the next few months. The goalkeeper, who was at Anfield when Klopp began his time in charge, has compared the forward’s situation to that of Virgil van Dijk, who will also enter the final year of his contract at the end of the season.

“The Mo Salah situation is an interesting one, because we're talking about their most effective player this season in terms of goal contributions,” Bogdán exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone.

“Salah is a fantastic player who has produced so many magical moments, but I can see a world where the smartest decision would be to sell him this summer given, I think, he has one year left on his contract. From what we've seen of him in the last couple of weeks, it looks unlikely he'll sign a new contract.

“But I don't know what's going on behind the scenes. In the case of Virgil van Dijk, we've heard him talk about how happy he is at the club and that he wants to stay, but we haven't heard this from Mo Salah.

“We’ve heard he was quite close to a move to Saudi Arabia last summer, and I'm glad that move didn't happen. But, if you want to make good money from him, then that has to come this summer, while he's still performing at such a high level. He's not getting any younger and he has one year left on his contract, so if I had to bet on it, I'd say they'll sell him this summer.”

Bogdán added: “You know, when you're at that kind of age, where you're in your early thirties, and you're still playing at a high level, you wonder whether something like a move to Spain, for Barcelona or Real Madrid, or Paris Saint-Germain in France, you want to make that move now; not when you're 34 or 35. If he has ambitions to play in another top league in Europe, then that has to be now.

“He's the most important player at the club right now, that's for sure. And so I would assume that his future is going to be one of the first things the new manager will want to address. The new coach has to be involved in the discussion, to some degree. Or, at least, he'll be informed of any decisions were the club to sell Salah, and subsequently he'll be allowed to have a say on who comes in to replace him.

“Look, there are so many scenarios here; you know, I could still see a world where Salah signs a new contract, only to be sold for even more money in a few months.

“I do think the club will need to bring someone in to replace him, though, if he was to leave. Liverpool have quality in those areas, but when you think of the money they'll get from him, you'd expect the club to sign someone else in that position.

“Unfortunately, Diogo Jota is injured a lot. I think Luis Díaz is a superb player, though, so you never know; maybe one of these guys steps up, takes the opportunity and fills that role from within the current squad. But, having said that, I think the team is already pretty thin, so if you're going to lose your best player on top of that, you have to then go and replace him accordingly.”

Liverpool.com says: It is a bit of a conundrum that Arne Slot and Richard Hughes will face this summer. Clearly, Salah is still Liverpool’s most dangerous attacking player, but with age against him and his contract running down, should they stick or twist?

Considering the other forwards aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment, you’d have to lean towards keeping Salah at Anfield. Liverpool though might not have any more opportunities to cash in, and Salah himself may want to force the issue. We’ll have to wait and see what the summer holds.
