Arsenal's nickname causes shock in America where it means something very different

Arsenal fans are proud of their unique nickname, however, they will have to make sure they do not go about identifying themselves by that name if they are in the United States

Arsenal have a rather crude nickname - and most fans in Britain are only just realising

Social media users in the United States have been left flabbergasted by Arsenal's reclaimed nickname.

Football fans outside the Emirates Stadium and the North Londoners best know Arsenal fans as the 'Gunners'. Yet, lots of North Londoners' supporters identify themselves as 'The Gooners,' a playful version of the nickname and a reclaimed insult rival fans used to call them.

However, those who wear red and white across the pond will have to make sure they do not go around proudly boasting about being a 'Gooner' and how they love 'watching the Gooners', if they want to make friends. In the United States, the term 'Gooners' has a completely different and lewd meaning.

A 'Gooner', from a US perspective at least, is defined by the Urban Dictionary as 'One who is completely and miserably addicted to pornography but embraces and loves it'. When American social media users on X found out Arsenal fans call themselves 'Gooners', they were rather shocked to say the least.

“What does Gooner mean in British, because this is very funny,” one person in the States said. “This is the greatest ‘separated by a common language’ in years,” another added.

A third very concerned fan asked: “What?” before a fourth wrote: “I love the UK actually.” While US fans came out in their numbers to poke fun at football fans in the UK, many newly informed Brits were left rather horrified by the meaning.

“My favourite club's nickname has become associated with pornography…” one slightly shell-shocked sounding supporter said.

Maybe Arsenal fans will consider not calling themselves...'that'

While all the fans were laughing or expressing their shock, one rather perturbed fan said: “I think everybody just needs to grow up.” The Gooners, sorry, Gunners, are still in the Premier League title race.

They face Bournemouth, Manchester United and Everton in their final matches of the season. Mikel Arteta's side will win the Premier League if they win all three matches and Manchester City drop points in at least one of their matches.
