There’s just over a month to go until the January transfer window opens for clubs, but will Chelsea be busy in the New Year?
The current Chelsea owners have been extremely active in recent windows, conducting plenty of business to help reshape the Blues squad. However, it feels like head coach Enzo Maresca is now working with a settled and talented group of players this season.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea will make it a priority in the upcoming transfer window to sort the future of their forgotten man Ben Chilwell.
It is explained that the 27-year-old defender only stayed with the Blues this campaign because the club couldn’t agree a loan or permanent transfer for him in the summer.
The report says that Chelsea will explore moving on the English left-back in January, whether that’s on loan or a permanent basis. Apparently, the club would prefer to sell him.
It’s been clear since pre-season that Chilwell isn’t part of Maresca’s plans at Stamford Bridge.
The £50m man (Sky Sports) has continued to train with the first-team squad in the first half of this season, but his one and only senior appearance was against Barrow in the Carabao Cup back in September.
The full-back hasn’t featured in a single matchday squad for the Premier League. Also, he wasn’t named in Chelsea’s squad for the Conference League.
Despite playing very little football in the last few months, Chilwell continues to be linked in the transfer rumour mill with several high-profile clubs.
Juventus may be interested in signing Chelsea defender Chilwell and bringing him to Italian football for the first time in his career.
Elsewhere, Manchester United have identified Chelsea’s Chilwell as a left-back target because they’re looking to strengthen that area of the pitch.
It’ll be a travesty if he spends the second half of the season watching from the sidelines, so hopefully something develops in January. At the age of 27, Chilwell should be enjoying his prime years and the Champions League winner has proven he’s good enough to play at the highest level.
