Gary Lineker has had his say on who he will vote for to win the Player of the Season award – Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka or Manchester City star Phil Foden.

This Premier League season has been an interesting one, hasn’t it?

There are still two teams battling it out for the title, the Champions League places are yet to be decided and there’s still some doubt over who will go down to the Championship.

To add to that, there have been several brilliant performances from players, but there just hasn’t been one standout name for the Player of the Season award.

Erling Haaland was the obvious choice last season, but there are quite a few contenders this time around.

Lineker has revealed who he will vote for.

Gary Lineker shares who he’ll vote for as Player of the Season – Bukayo Saka or Phil Foden

Picking the Player of the Season will be very difficult this time.

A number of players have had amazing seasons for their respective clubs, but there is just no obvious candidate for the award, is there?

There are 10 players who have scored between 15 and 21 goals in the Premier League this season, and the assists leaderboard is just as tight.

Defenders have played an incredible role for many clubs too, and although they rarely ever get the recognition, some of them must be viewed as contenders.

The standout candidates to win the Player of the Season award, in our opinion, are Bukayo Saka of Arsenal and Phil Foden from Manchester City.

Both of them have had amazing individual seasons, and Gary Lineker has now had his say on who he will vote for as 2023/24’s Player of the Season.

He said on the Rest is Football podcast: “The voting is about due and I do vote in the football writers one and I think I’m going to give it to Phil Foden.

“I think he has been amazing this season.”

Comparing Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden’s stats this season

Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden have both been amazing this season.

The Arsenal man is one of Mikel Arteta’s most important players, while Foden has stepped up a level for Manchester City this term following Riyad Mahrez’s departure last summer.

Both players have been crucial for their respective sides in the title race, and they will be key for England as well in the Euros this summer.

So, how do Saka and Foden’s stats in the Premier League this season compare against each other? Let’s have a look.

Games Goals Assists xG xGA Big chances created
Bukayo Saka 33 15 9 13.84 10.22 13
Phil Foden 31 15 7 9.32 6.38 10

The stats are close, but as you can see above, Foden is massively overperforming his xG and has created three fewer big chances than Saka this season.

However, the Manchester City man has played two fewer games than the Arsenal number seven.

An argument can be made that both players deserve to win the Player of the Season award, but we think whoever lifts the Premier League will be the one that gets the nod.
