Liverpool transfer news as 'visit' explained and $54m needed in Spurs race for Mo Salah colleague

Liverpool transfer news as a price is set in a race with Spurs for an international colleague of Mohamed Salah. A trip to watch the Reds has also been explained.

Egypt's forward #10 Mohamed Salah gestures as Egypt's forward #22 Omar Marmoush reacts during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2024 group B football match between Egypt and Ghana at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on January 18, 2024.
Liverpool and Spurs have been linked with a transfer for an international teammate of Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool's playing department is just about the only area that isn't getting overhauled this summer. Jürgen Klopp is leaving behind a squad that already looks in pretty good shape.

Behind the scenes, a new-look recruitment structure will decide what sort of additions are needed. Michael Edwards has returned to the FSG fold as CEO of Football, and he has appointed Richard Hughes as the new sporting director.

They will work in tandem with the new head coach, expected to be Arne Slot. The Feyenoord boss won't call the shot on transfers, but will certainly have input — and while it might be a quiet summer, he may well want to make an addition or two to start making the team his own.

Right now, however, it's hard to predict the areas where Liverpool might strengthen. The defense looks like the most obvious place for reinforcements, but even there, the likes of Ibrahima Konaté, Jarell Quansah and indeed Joe Gomez provide an element of future-proofing.

But with Arsenal and Manchester City eventually easing away this season, the Reds cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to finding ways to improve. Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today, including an explanation for one 'target' attending a match and the possibility of signing one of Mohamed Salah's international teammates ahead of Spurs.

Lutsharel Geertruida (Feyenoord)

Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida caused a stir when he was spotted in the away end during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium. Already the subject of mild transfer speculation, this sighting kicked things into overdrive.

The expected appointment of Slot has also supercharged the Geertruida links. But This is Anfield has poured some cold water on the idea he's Anfield-bound with an explanation for his visit to the capital.

Citing Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad, it claims that Geertruida was only in the country to visit close friend Crysencio Summerville — another who has been linked to Liverpool, funnily enough. The Feyenoord man had watched his friend in action for Leeds against QPR the previous night, and stuck around in London.

Liverpool.com says: It's still a little interesting that Geertruida appeared to be in with the away fans, but otherwise this account of events more or less clears things up. It did always seem like things would be somewhat more subtle if Liverpool actually was chasing the young defender.

However, just because the visit to watch Liverpool was perfectly innocent, that does not preclude transfer interest in the future. While Slot will not have free rein over recruitment, the Reds have been watching his Feyenoord team very closely to assess him as a manager, and it's very plausible that Geertruida was one of those to catch the eye.

Likewise, though Slot will become 'head coach' rather than manager, it's not as though Edwards and Hughes will disregard his opinions. Should he be particularly keen on Geertruida, the club will no doubt at least run the numbers.

Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Liverpool and Tottenham are both keen on Omar Marmoush, a teammate of Mohamed Salah on the international stage. That's according to Bild.

The 25-year-old only joined Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, but has enjoyed a very impressive campaign. The Bundesliga outfit is reluctant to part with the forward, who is contracted until 2027, and would demand $54m (£43m/€50m) before considering it.

Nonetheless, both Liverpool and Spurs are 'showing interest'. Marmoush has 31 caps for Egypt, scoring five goals, including one in the latest African Cup of Nations after Mo Salah had been forced off against Ghana.

Liverpool.com says: Almost exclusively a center-forward, it's not immediately clear where Marmoush would fit into Liverpool's plans. But more depth will be needed as the Reds compete in the expanded Champions League.

And amid the talk around Darwin Núñez, perhaps there will be more churn in the playing department than expected this summer. Slot could probably do with a degree of continuity amid all the change, but if one or more of the existing forwards do move on, perhaps Marmoush could be of interest.
