Only 10 players ‘guaranteed’ to stay at Manchester United this summer

Earlier this month, after Manchester United dropped seven points from winning positions in the space of just a few days against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Liverpool, former Red Devil Paul Parker drew up a list of players he’d be happy to see stay beyond the club’s first Ineos-led summer.

And it’s a pretty damning indictment of Manchester United‘s recruitment, across recent seasons, that Parker could make a case for no fewer than eighteen (!) first-team players being sold on, via Tipsbladet.

Now, it is highly unlikely – of course – that Ineos will preside over a cull quite that brutal. But with it being suggested that only ten members of Erik ten Hag’s senior squad are all-but guaranteed to stay beyond the September deadline, it appears that a pretty large number of players may be about to play their final few games in that iconic red shirt.

Big changes expected at Manchester United

The Mirror reports that Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund – who could form the spine of a new-look United side with or without Ten Hag – will definitely being staying put.

Unsurprinsingly, United have no plans to cash in on Mason Mount either, just one year after investing £55 million in bringing the former Chelsea favourite to Old Trafford. Mount, a wonderfully-modern and yet rather underrated talent, still has a big role to play once he puts those injury issues behind him.

You can say the same of Luke Shaw, who has also missed large sections of the current campaign.

Considering how far they have both come in recent months, Diogo Dalot and Alejandro Garnacho are also only still at the beginning of their Man United journeys, while 19-year-old Willy Kambwala has done enough in his admittedly limited game-time to suggest he could have a big future at the club too.

For everyone else, however, it’s ‘play for your future’ time.

In summary, those ‘guaranteed’ to stay are:

Could Marcus Rashford really leave Old Trafford?

Despite Harry Maguire’s resurgence, The Mirror believes that Man United may be open to offers for a 31-year-old who is not getting any younger. Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jonny Evans could also go too, with United expected to target at least two new centre-halves, Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton reportedly the first-choice pick.

Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial will not be missed, apart from in some strangely vocal corners of social media. Ditto Brazilians Casemiro and Antony, both of whom have fallen off a proverbial cliff in difficult second seasons in England.

The Mirror’s most eye-catching claim, of course, surrounds one Marcus Rashford. It is reported that he too may be sold ‘for the right price’. Despite a staggering drop off in recent months, do not be too surprised if long-time admirers Paris Saint-Germain come calling, especially with Kylian Mbappe’s departure opening up a spot for a new right-footed, left-sided attacker.

Whichever side of the Rashford debate you fall upon, there is something to be said for the idea that two of the club’s most fluid attacking performances in recent weeks have come without the underperforming England international in Ten Hag’s XI; Antony and Garnacho starting on the wings instead as United hit seven goals past Chelsea and Sheffield United.
