Elia Caprile’s recent Serie A success has been exemplified by Leeds’ growing goalkeeping struggles.
Daniel Farke could move for a goalkeeper this January after Illan Meslier’s misfortunes in goal for Leeds.
Paul Robinson favours Karl Darlow in goal for Leeds after Meslier continues to put doubt on Farke’s Premier League pursuit.
After serious scrutiny surrounding the 24-year-old, Farke could look at alternatives with the Whites’ being linked to River Plate’s Jeremias Ledesma.
However, Leeds already had the ideal number one, as Caprile was a player at Elland Road in 2022.
Former Leeds Goalkeeper Caprile played heroically against AC Milan on his debut for Cagliari as serious regret might be seeping through for the Whites.
Leeds sold Caprile to Italian side Bari as he worked his way up the ladder in Italy securing a move to Napoli.
The 23-year-old is enduring his second loan spell from Antonio Conte’s men with Cagiliari, and after his performance in Milan, he couldn’t be happier.
MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES
Caprile spoke after the Milan game via the print edition of Corriere Dello Sport (11/01/25): “Three years ago I played in front of a hundred people, on Saturday at San Siro there were seventy thousand, my childhood dream has come true.
“Napoli? I say a great team. But I suffered, I trained hard, I wanted to play more. The club gave the go-ahead and Cagliari found an agreement on a choice dictated by my needs. With a precise target: Giving my best. As I did between Chievo, Pro Patria, Leeds, Empoli, and Napoli.”
With Meslier struggling, and Caprile shining, Leeds must be scratching their heads.
Don Goodman has explained that the Frenchman has found himself in trouble at Elland Road – trouble he could have avoided if Meslier had taken advice to leave Leeds United.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast, Goodman commented on Meslier’s current situation at Leeds after mistakes against Sunderland and Hull City.
“There is definitely a problem,” Goodman said.
“We were there at the Stadium of Light when Meslier misjudged the bounce of the ball.
“It was fascinating to see how particularly the likes of Pascal Struijk were rallying around Meslier, then you see Joe Rodon’s face when this (Hull City) mistake occurred and wonder whether for his sake Farke might remove him.”
Leeds could have Caprile’s qualities and remove the goalkeeper problem from the situation, but now Farke has a tough choice to make with Meslier.
