Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has quietly been going about his business this season despite coming under fire for his wayward finishing. And as the end of the campaign approaches, he sits in front of numerous big-money forwards in the Premier League scoring charts.

At just 22 years old, Jackson was still earning his stripes when Chelsea shelled out £32million to sign him from Villarreal last summer. Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool paid more than double that fee for Rasmus Hojlund, Kai Havertz and Darwin Nunez respectively.

Yet, incredibly, all three players have scored fewer goals than Jackson in the Premier League this term. With a brace in the 5-0 win over West Ham on Saturday, the Chelsea man took his tally to 13.

That leaves him narrowly outside the top 10, and just ahead of Arsenal forward Havertz, who has been raking in the plaudits after finding confidence in front of goal over the past few weeks.

For all the praise thrown in Havertz's direction, his 12-goal haul leaves him with catching up to do if he is to overtake Jackson before the curtain closes on 2023/24. Nunez, on 11 goals, and Hojlund, way back on eight goals, are also at risk of finishing behind the Senegalese in the individual standings.

Other highly-rated stars are also trailing in Jackson's wake including £60m Tottenham star Richarlison and Manchester City's World Cup winner, Julian Alvarez.

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon is among those to have torn into Jackson this season as he called his finishing 'League Two level'. Speaking to NBC's The Two Robbies podcast, he said: "Jackson looks like he’s devoid of all confidence in front of goal.

"I was watching him playing on the shoulder and he makes some good little runs. I think that’s why he catches your eye when you first see him play at the start of the season, and you think, 'Oh, hang on, he’s got a bit of something here'.

"He stretches the player, little spins on the shoulder, gets in behind and that’s never a bad thing. If you do that, you’ve always got half a chance. He gets in those positions but what happens after that… Some of his shooting, wow. It was like League Two."

Despite his solid goals return, Jackson may have a tough time keeping his place at the tip of Chelsea's attack next season. Christopher Nkunku should be back fit after an injury-riddled campaign, Armando Broja is returning from a loan spell at Fulham and the Blues are rumoured to be eyeing up Victor Osimhen in the transfer market.
