In 2022, Newcastle United beat AC Milan to a major signing. Now they could get the chance to do it again in 2024.
The Magpies have had a lot to do with AC Milan in recent years, and they even met in the Champions League earlier this season. In fact, it was the Serie A giants who ended Newcastle’s European dream with a 2-1 win at St James’ Park.
Away from the Champions League, Newcastle and AC Milan have had a lot of comings together in the transfer market.
In 2022, Newcastle and AC Milan went head-to-head in the race to sign Sven Botman from Lille.
It was a tussle that went back and forth, with Paolo Maldini eager to bring the Dutch centre-back to the San Siro.
But Milan could not match Newcastle’s financial power, with Botman moving to St James’ Park for £35million. It was a brilliant bit of business, and an early sign that the Magpies were going to be a force in the transfer market during the PIF era.
That continued last year too, with Newcastle snapping up Sandro Tonali from AC Milan. That was a landmark deal at the time, but is no longer looked upon quite as positively due to the midfielder’s suspension.
Now the two sides could be intertwined again, with Milan suddenly eyeing up a player who Newcastle United have been heavily linked with.
According to Milan Live, the Italian giants are interested in signing Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer this summer.
They need to bring in a new centre-back, with Simon Kjaer due to leave. And they have identified Tosin as a possible arrival, with the fact he is going to be available on a free very appealing.
But it is appealing to Newcastle too, who are also trying to sign the 26-year-old. While the club have played down suggestions that a deal is close, it does appear that the Magpies are in pole position to land the ‘special‘ centre-back.
And it would also appear that Newcastle have an advantage over AC Milan, despite only one of those sides preparing to compete in the Champions League next season.
While the Magpies might not be in UEFA’s elite competition, Milan Live report that Eddie Howe’s side can offer Tosin a much more lucrative contract.
That will certainly be a factor for the Fulham defender, as is always the case with players who are moving on free transfers.
It has even been reported that Newcastle are prepared to pay Tosin more than £100,000-a-week to move to St James’ Park. That is a lot of money, and seemingly more than what Milan are prepared to pay the Manchester City academy graduate.
