Eric Dier left covered in blood after heroic moment as Bayern fans hail Tottenham loanee

Eric Dier put his body on the line during Bayern Munich's Bundesliga clash with Stuttgart on Saturday, but his efforts and a goal from Harry Kane couldn't prevent them from tasting defeat

Eric Dier's head was left gushing with blood after he made a vital intervention which further endeared him to Bayern Munich's supporters - but it couldn't prevent them from suffering another loss.

The Tottenham loanee, who's set to join the German giants on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window, produced a goal-line clearance to deny Stuttgart sensation Serhou Guirassy a goal in Saturday's Bundesliga clash. In the 28th minute, Guirassy got the end of a pass inside the penalty area and looked certain to score in an empty net, with Manuel Neuer beaten.

But Dier, determined not to let the Bundesliga's second-top goalscorer bag his 26th of the season, managed to head the ball away but reopened a gash from earlier in the match in the process. The 30-year-old defender then played on as blood poured from his head, later receiving treatment from the Bayern medical team, as the club's fans applauded his courage and bravery.

Unfortunately for Dier, Stuttgart took the lead one minute later, as centre-back Leonidas Stergiou broke the deadlock. Bayern responded through a Harry Kane penalty but two late goals from the third-placed hosts condemned the former champions to their seventh defeat of the Bundesliga season.

Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel was furious after the loss, saying: "This was completely unnecessary. In the second half, we had the chances to score and conceded the goals just before the end due to lack of concentration.

"If there's ever been a game I want to move on from quickly it's this one. The next four days count. We're going to flick the switch immediately now. We need to give the same kind of performance we did last Tuesday and use our opportunities."

Stuttgart are now just two points behind Bayern with two games remaining, but Dier and co's focus is now on the Champions League. The Bavarians will face Real Madrid in their semi-final second leg on Wednesday, having played out a 2-2 draw earlier this week.

Dier will be hoping to shut out the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior in Madrid, and boost his chances of being included in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024. "Obviously, I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I'm that level of a player," he recently told Gary Neville on The Overlap.

"I haven't spoken at all to Gareth Southgate, but you try and play as well as possible for your club and then the decision is out of your hands. Since the World Cup, I wouldn't say that I've had any dip in form, I'm playing the best football of my career since [Antonio] Conte came [to Tottenham] and I've carried it on since I've been here [at Bayern], and I think I've shown that."
