Frank Lampard has appeared to aim a dig at Chelsea after being appointed Coventry City's new manager.

The former Blues midfielder is set to begin his first managerial role since taking over at Chelsea as caretaker manager after Graham Potter's sacking in 2023. The West London club won one and lost eight of their 11 matches under him.

Lampard also had a spell as a permanent manager at Stamford Bridge between 2019 and 2021, as well as roles at Derby County and Everton.

And after being confirmed as manager of Championship strugglers Coventry, the 46-year-old has referenced his second spell at the Blues. Lampard mentioned the seemingly chaotic environment at the club under Todd Boehly and Clearlake when he was in situ.

"When I rejoined Chelsea I went into a job that was a bit of babysitting from me, in terms of going in to tide them over for seven weeks," he said via ESPN. "I learned if you don't get the environment right then it's very difficult to succeed."

Asked about early impressions at his new club, he added: "It’s been very enjoyable. A long day.

"I have met all the very good people working at the training ground. It’s a very warm place, as a welcome. I met the players and had a meeting with them and then my first training session, which I enjoyed, because it’s my first for a while.

"It was nice to get out with the players and form some early relationships. We have a tight turn-around to Saturday, which is our priority, as it stands."
