Sergio Perez's dad hints at shock next career move after Red Bull F1 axe

Sergio Perez's father has hinted that could make the switch to Formula E following his Formula 1 exit.

The Mexican racer was let go by Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season after what was arguably the most challenging year of his career. Perez began strongly and earned a contract extension but, after putting pen to paper on that deal, his results nosedived and he failed to find form again before the end of the campaign.

All-electric racing series Formula E has often been a refuge for talent exiting the F1 paddock. In 2025, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nyck de Vries and Pascal Wehrlein will be among the five ex-F1 stars on the grid and, in previous years, that number has been even higher.

According to his father, Antonio Perez Garibay, the 34-year-old could be the next F1 star to make the switch. "I would never have imagined Formula E, and I would be careful because we could have Checo Pérez racing here," he told Mexican outlet Estadio Deportes.

"Of course, without any problem [I see him racing here]. The category has been around for 11 years, it is very young, today it is number two in the world and within the next five years it will be number one. That is why I am here. I am looking forward to what comes next."

Alberto Longo, co-founder of Formula E, welcomed the idea of the six-time Grand Prix winner joining after Perez Snr's comments. "We welcome him with open arms," he confirmed, according to the Express.

"I also say that it is not the decision of the championship's promoters, which is us, but rather his decision and then that of the main teams because, in the end, they are the ones who decide who sits in each of their cars."

After expressing his contentment with life beyond the racetrack, the ex-Red Bull ace has been notably absent from social media, opting for some downtime with his loved ones in Mexico. During a conversation with children at the Leon State Fair, Perez was quizzed about a potential F1 comeback.

"Honestly, I don't know," he confessed. "It's too soon to have an answer. Everything happened very quickly at the end of the season, so I didn't expect it. Now I'm in an incredible, dreamy position, which I didn't even realise I was in, so if you ask me now, I don't know. I'm very happy with my life, very excited about what's ahead.

"For sure, if I receive a good, interesting project, then I'll definitely consider it and think about it. It will all come in its own time. For now, my priority in the months ahead is to have fun, do what I haven't been able to, travel, be with my family... In the next six months, I'll make a decision on what I want for the next step of my career."
