This is shaping up to be Manchester United's most proactive summer in the seller's market since the inception of the transfer window in 2002.

With the club feeling the squeeze of the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules and no Champions League football next season, United will have to be more proactive at selling than ever before. United have budgeted for three significant buys - a common practice since 2016 - and any other incomings are dependent on who they shift.

Seven players with first team experience are out on loan and the intention is for almost all of them to be sold or released. Several existing squad members also face uncertain futures.

Realistically, there will not be a market for certain players and United concede they may have to reluctantly let certain players go as they are more sellable. Here is who should stay and go:

Andre Onana was only signed last summer and should be more dependable next season after an error-strewn first campaign. Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund are the poster boys of what could be the next successful United side and they are ably skippered by Bruno Fernandes, arguably United's player of the season.

Diogo Dalot is a durable and efficient right back who is yet to fully maximise his potential and, when fit, Luke Shaw is one of the most complete left backs in Europe. Lisandro Martinez has the skill set to be one of the outstanding centre backs on the continent if he can stay injury-free.

Beyond probable starters, it would be logical to keep Harry Maguire given he is one of the few players who have performed this season. Three other centre halves are likelier to leave and gutting the entire central defensive department would be inadvisable. United also have a one-year option to trigger in Maguire's contract that would tie him to the club until 2026.

The experienced Tom Heaton is a valued member of the leadership group, Willy Kambwala is raw but has the attributes to develop and Amad deserves a fair crack of the whip.

Selling Scott McTominay has to be considered for PSR purposes despite his best goalscoring season, but his contract situation (it expires in 2025 with a plus-one option) ensures he is among the keeps. Mason Mount is as well only due to injuries. He is on trial next season.

Sell/release

Raphael Varane has been a decent defender for United but has come to the end of his shelf life. Had Jonny Evans not broken down so often recently, he would have been worth retaining but it is difficult to make a case for that now.

Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are both out of contract next year and both have to be sold. Realistically, there are not going to be any takers for Tyrell Malacia after a year out injured and the flagging Christian Eriksen may not even generate a fee.

Altay Bayindir is hardly indisposable, Sofyan Amrabat has to be returned to Fiorentina and United can finally bid adieu to crock monsieur Anthony Martial. Casemiro is on his last legs and the FA Cup final has to be his last dance in elite football. Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho are damaged goods who should never play for the club again for wildly different reasons.

Antony has shown glimpses of quality in recent months against Liverpool, Chelsea and Burnley but has gone backwards after a respectable first season, Facundo Pellistri has had three loans in La Liga and is a sellable asset. Fellow loanees Donny van de Beek and Hannibal Mejbri have to be sold and Brandon Williams released.

Marcus Rashford's seasonal performances are too inconsistent, his relationship is broken with the matchgoers and he has crossed the manager more than once this season.
