Manchester United handed mixed predictions as Ruben Amorim searches for first Premier League win

United welcome Everton to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday

Ruben Amorim will manage his first Premier League match at Old Trafford on Sunday when Manchester United welcome Everton to the 'Theatre of Dreams'.

Amorim's first taste of the Premier League ended in a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich Town last Sunday, but he had his first taste of victory in the United dugout on Thursday as United beat Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the Europa League.

As United continue to get to grips with his 3-4-3 formation, there are signs that Amorim is turning things in the right direction and a first Premier League win will only underline that belief.

United head into the weekend in 12th in the Premier League and Amorim will be desperate to move his side back into the top half of the table.

With that in mind, Manchester Evening News have rounded up the predictions of a number of leading Premier League pundits ahead of the visit of Sean Dyche's side.

Paul Merson

The Sky Sports pundit told SportsKeeda: "Nothing changed for United last week in my opinion. Ipswich were by far the better team.

"I think even Ruben Amorim was shocked by what happened. If they don't start winning games, Amorim will have to start answering a lot more questions whether he likes it or not. That is just how big this club is and how the Premier League is in a nutshell.

"I'm not entirely convinced about Manchester United's new system under Amorim. After a point in that game, you would've thought Ipswich were the bigger club and not United, that's how it went.

"You could say everyone was away on international duty and he did not have enough time. But if that performance was against one of the big boys in the league, Manchester United would have been destroyed by four or five goals!

"Everton are a team who have a special X-factor in them. They always have that one fixture every season when they just spring to life and surprise us. I'm going for a United win, but I can't help but admit that I have a sneak feeling about Everton."

Merson's prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Everton

Chris Sutton

The former Celtic and Chelsea forward told BBC Sport: "There has been so much hype, or even over-hype, about Manchester United, and I feel a bit sorry for their new manager Ruben Amorim because he needs time, and two or three transfer windows, to put things right.

"There was a lot of excitement over the way they started his first game in charge, against Ipswich, but blimey you have got a problem if the Tractor Boys are out-playing you, which is what happened in the end.

"Things got worse for Amorim when Ed Sheeran interrupted his interview on Sky afterwards. I have to give credit to commentator Conor McNamara here, but maybe it is time for Amorim to listen to one of Sheeran’s biggest hits and think about 'the shape of Man U'.

"I think the reality is hitting home about Amorim using his favoured 3-4-3 formation with their current squad - especially with Christian Eriksen and Casemiro in midfield.

"As for Everton, well a fair few of their fans still seem to be on Sean Dyche's back, and they could not find a way past Brentford's 10 men last week.

"This time, they will be the team looking to hold out and I believe they can do it because this United team is going to take a while to click.

"Once the initial buzz of Amorim’s first home game dies down, things could go flat at Old Trafford, the way it has done quite a lot recently.

"I hope it happens for them under Amorim because he seems like a decent guy, but he is in the Manchester United madhouse now and he is about to find out what it is like to be under the microscope every single week."

Sutton's prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Everton

Mark Lawrenson

The former BBC Sport pundit told Paddy Power: "Everton can’t stop drawing and they’re certainly not scoring much."

"With home advantage and the crowd behind them in Ruben Amorim’s first game at Old Trafford Manchester United should win this."

Lawrenson's prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Everton
