It’s going to be fascinating to see who leaves Newcastle United this summer.

For most of the PIF era thus far, much of the talk surrounding Newcastle has focused on who would be arriving at St James’ Park.

FFP limitations, however, mean the club may need to sell players in order to raise funds for a rebuild of the squad they wish to undertake.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, of course, have been strongly linked with moves away from the club.

Still, surely no one at the club will want to lose them if they can avoid it. Whether that’s possible remains to be seen and the fact Guimaraes has a release clause in his contract does weaken Newcastle’s position.

The star duo, however, aren’t the only players being tipped for an exit.

Callum Wilson, who Eddie Howe confirmed he wanted to keep after Saturday’s win over Burnley, is reportedly looking to leave.

Indeed, his agents are believed to be looking for potential landing spots after Wilson’s January links away.

The England international has proved his worth in recent weeks. When fit, the 32-year-old remains a palpable goal threat at Premier League level, scoring twice in the last two games to take his tally up to nine goals in nine starts this season.

Such was the level of his performance at Turf Moor, pundit Chris Sutton hailed the “slippery” Wilson as “tricky” to play against.

How much money Newcastle expect for Callum Wilson this summer

Now, some insight into what might happen to Wilson has emerged.

According to The Athletic, the club are expecting a market for the former Bournemouth star this summer at around £15-£20m.

They also add that Howe does not want to lose Wilson and believes he and Isak can continue to form a partnership next season.

Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood are probably the only two players Newcastle have sold for reasonably big money since the takeover.

That cannot continue for the FFP balancing act, though it perhaps speaks to the relatively base from which Howe arrived. Frankly, the team just didn’t have that many sellable assets until the influx of Saudi Arabian cash.

Wilson, at least, looks sellable. In an ideal world, Newcastle wouldn’t be losing a player who offers a guarantee of goals at the top level but tough decisions will surely need to be made.

This summer, the forward will have just a year left on his contract. Already far from dependable on the fitness front, Newcastle aren’t going to have much more opportunity to sell him for anything approaching maximum value.

Sadly, it seems a natural time to depart.
