Callum Wilson is aiming to put himself back in the mix for Euro 2024 despite a frustarting season at Newcastle United

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has questioned whether Callum Wilson is reliable enough to make England’s Euro 2024 squad.
The 32-year-old has bagged two goals in as many games since returning from a pectoral injury. Bagging the first in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Burnley helped Newcastle United tighten their grip on sixth spot.
Speaking post-match, Wilson admitted his frustrations at the 2023-24 campaign but refused to give up on his England dream. He said: “Timing is everything. For me, I’ve been frustrated throughout the season with the way it’s gone.
“All you can do when you are on the pitch is take your opportunity and put the ball in the net. Thankfully, I did that and the manager (Southgate) was watching.”
Wilson was part of the Three Lions’ setup for the World Cup in Qatar, making substitute appearances against Iran and Wales. He last featured in the 3-1 win over Scotland in September but has been hampered by injuries since.
That theme has hampered his Newcastle career but, when fit, his goal record is up there with the best. However, ex-England international Foster is unsure about Wilson’s fitness record ahead of a major tournament.
“I think Callum Wilson has always just been a little bit overlooked just because of his injury record,” he told his YouTube channel. “And the thing is for Newcastle, they work his week out so he is ready for the game on Saturday. He probably has a bit of a down week really, sort of rests and recovers because he is very susceptible to injuries
“I think that’s the problem when it comes to England. (For) the players who aren’t going to be on the pitch on the Saturday afternoon or whenever it comes, you need the rest of them to be at it.
“You need them to be at it in training every day to keep all the morale going, to keep the standards high. I just worry that Callum Wilson won’t be able to do that for Gareth Southgate.”
