Reiss Nelson’s excellent performance for Fulham against Brentford earlier this week really caught the attention of a lot of Arsenal fans.
Nelson is on loan at Craven Cottage for the season and is planned to return to Arsenal once the campaign is concluded.
Arsenal effectively replaced Nelson with Raheem Sterling towards the end of the transfer window – a move that hasn’t worked out so far.
Arsenal are unlikely to sign Sterling permanently according to Arsenal Insider sources, and they’ve also set their stall out in terms of Nelson’s future beyond the season too.
Sources confirm that Arsenal were hoping to see more from Nelson whilst out on loan so far – who has only just broken into the starting eleven at Fulham.
Marco Silva was very complimentary about Nelson after his strong showing against Brentford, but he has only played 288 minutes thus far despite being fully fit.
On their part, Fulham would also want to see a lot more from the 24-year-old too if they were to explore a permanent move.
To that end, Nelson doesn’t feature in Arsenal’s plans, he’s a player who the club are not expecting to return and be part of the first team.
In summary, Arsenal would love to sell Nelson if the right opportunity arose.
Of course, it could be considered that Nelson was in a similar situation to Fabio Vieira right now, two Arsenal players in their mid-twenties who are out on loan with an uncertain future.
Arsenal didn’t originally plan to loan out Vieira this summer, but the arrivals of Sterling and Merino changed their thinking.
On Vieira’s part, he’s more likely to stay than Nelson, and Arsenal will continue to assess the Portuguese attacking midfielder whilst he’s out on loan.
Vieira has now played 306 minutes for Porto since returning from injury, and the 24-year-old is a player who is still liked in north London, a profile celebrated for his versatility.
There remains a possibility that Vieria returns to the first team fold in N5, a player who both Edu and Arteta were thought to be so keen to bring to Arsenal.
