It's claimed the M16 giants may sanction the academy graduates return to the club if they aren't satisfied with offers amid heavyweight interest from England, Italy and Spain.

They are also said to be ready to remove the risk of losing Greenwood for free next summer, strengthening their negotiation position in the coming months.

HITC report that United have told their former No. 11 that they will extend his contract by 12 months until June 2026.

It increases the possibility of Greenwood staying put if United's asking price isn't met and hints at his value to the club, with other players noticeably not yet receiving the same treatment.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Hannibal Mejbri and Christian Eriksen are out of contract next summer but aren't in talks over new deals.

Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo are also set to be released on the same date but have one-year extension options.

All nine players will be available for transfer this summer as a result, but it wouldn't be surprising if Maguire, McTominay and Amad's extensions are also triggered.

Greenwood's return would spark controversy. The backlash United received for ex-chief executive Richard Arnold's reported failed attempt to reintegrate him last year caused a late U-turn.

But by sealing his signature until 2026, another loan next term can't be ruled out, and United would still be able to generate a transfer fee a year before his expiry.
